Two Way Light Switch Wiring Have you ever wonder how a lamp that is used to light up the stairs of a building is connected to the two switches that controls it from either end? These two way switches have a single pole double throw (SPDT) configuration. Each has a common terminal (COM) with a pole that can be switched between position L1 or L2. The two way light switch wiring can be implemented by using 2 different methods. Both of the methods used are described below.

how do i wire in - lightswitchwiring.gif

The first method as shown in the figure above have the COM, L1 and L2 of both the SPDT switches connected together. For incandescent lamp, the recommended wire gauge used is AWG #18. The LIVE AC Source is connected to L1 of SW1 and one side of the load is connected to L2 of SW2. The other side of the load is then connected to NEUTRAL of the AC Source. With this configuration, the lamp will be turned ON when one switch is at ON position and the other is at OFF position. If both switches are in the same position, the lamp will be OFF.

The other method is as shown in the figure above. In this configuration, the L1 of both SW1 and SW2 are connected together. Similarly, the L2 of both SW1 and SW2 are connected together. The LIVE of the AC Source is connected to COM of SW1 and one side of the load is connected to COM of SW2. The other side of the load is then connected to the NEUTRAL of the AC Source. With this configuration, the lamp will be turned ON when one switch is ON and the other is also ON. If both switches are in different position, the lamp will be OFF.

Take note that as the installation involves mains power supply, only those who are qualified and have electrical wiring knowledge should do this wiring. When doing the wiring, it is recommended that the power supply is disconnected from the load and the switches.

I need to find the correct wires to join from the loom to the trailer the diagram i have does not match the colours for instance there is no yellow how do i match the right ones up to the trailer

Use a voltmeter and see which wires in the loom show power when (1) tail lights are on, (2) brake lights are on, (3) each turn signal is on, and (4) which shows continuity with vehicle ground/earth. Match these up with the appropriate wires in the trailer harness.
If your brake lights and turn signals are the same bulb on the towing vehicle, you're all set. If they are different bulbs, you'll need an adapter to get both brake lights and turn signals to work on the trailer.

Which wire from indicator switch goes to flasher relay im using a narva 2 pin flasher relay in a 2002 holden rodeo one positive from battery an wht colour would it be from the switch or is it 2 wires

There could be no relay in the vehicle because it doesn't need one. CANbus vehicles tend to use a single module to carry out all the vehicle timing requirements - indicators, hazards, wipers, courtesy lights and so forth.
If the flashers don't work it would be better to repair the system than to rewire and use an outdated method, perhaps introducing further fault codes that might affect the operation of other stuff.

A little used hazard switch is a common cause of flasher failure...

If you really must rewire the system, the (ignition) live, as you say, goes to one side of the flasher unit and the other to the centre contact of the indicator switch though you will need a wiring diagram to identify the colour. There is no single universal colour code though if I was looking at an old British car I would expect to see a dark green wire with a thin black trace line.

A wiring diagram will be useful also for identifying the wiring to the lamps and separating the hazard switch wiring from the circuit. If there are two dashboard tell-tale lights the 2-pin relay will be ok but if there is only one you will need a 3 or 4 pin unit depending on whether electronic or electro-mechanical.

I have one light in a room w/ 3 light switches to operate it. We want to eliminate one of the switches (has two 14-2 wires going to and coming from). The other two switches have 14-3 wires coming from...

I can help you with this problem but will need to confirm some details. Please confirm that the switch you wish to eliminate has two twin cables running to the switch mech. I'm not sure what you mean by two 14-2 wires. I am guessing you simply mean two twin cables. I'm guessing that the two twin cables have the same coloured building wires coming out of them. If so, remove these wires from the switch and join the same colours together. The other two switches will simply now work on a two way basis.

What causes the brake lights not come on,but allow 3rd mount light to come on? i've checked the bulbs, sockets, fuses. now i'm stumped.

THOSE LIGHTS ARE ON 2 DIFFERENT CIRCUITS. ONE WHITE WIRE COMING OUT OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH GOES TO THE CENTER BRAKE LIGHT. THE OTHER WHITE WIRE GOES FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO & THROUGH THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH SO THE LIGHTS CAN BE USED AS BRAKE LIGHTS OR TURN LIGHTS. THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS GOOD BECAUSE THE CENTER BRAKE LIGHT IS WORKING. IT IS A BAD WIRE { WHITE } FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH OR A BAD TURN SIGNAL SWITCH.

2 fuel injectors not working and I dont think the problem is the injectors. If the problem is not in the wires, what controls the injectors? 1990 chevy beretta GTZ 2.3L

what engine do you have? the 3.1 the injectors are all wired togther, so take a test light and check the plugs on all of your inj. use a separate ground to check the hot wires, then use a positive connection to check the ground wires. if you have power to all, it is probably the inj., the 2.0 is the same, the 2.2 or 2.4 may have a different inj system, but you can check the wires the same way. the different system works off of a cam sensor, but if it didnt work no inj would work at all. it then feeds into the ecm (car computer). but i bet its either a wire issue or a couple of bad inj.
