You will need th make and model number of the hard drive. You will need to remove it from the enclosure to read it off the side. From there you should be able to find a matching hard drive (form and function) to replace it with.

The drive is usually held in the enclosure with either screws or clips. Once removed, the hard drive will slide out the front of the enclosure, although you may have to give it a tug if the pins on the hard drive are not zero insertion force pins.

You will also need ot know whether it is an IDE drive or a SATA or some other protocol. You can locate this information online once you ahve the make and model number.

Contact the seller for assistance in warranty replacement. They will either handle it themselves or refer you to the manufacturer for assistance.

I think that your disk-drive is "SLIGHTLY" dead. :-(

Disassemble the enclosure.

Get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.

Access Maxtor's web-site, and check the warranty-status of the disk.

If the warranty still is valid, Maxtor will replace the disk-drive, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has ended, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it into the enclosure, to "reconstitute" your external storage-device.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

Maxtor external HD motor died

Thankyou for explaining this in detail and i am afraid to tell you that if you think that the motors in the HD or dead, then the only way of getting the data off you HD is to find a data recovery specialist.

  • the minute you break the seal on a hd case, the hd will deteriorate because of foreign contaminants, e.g. dust get in there and damage it.
  • you cant swap the platters round either because all platters are different. if you swap the platters around, the hd will not have a clue what to do
