Problem with Toshiba Qosmio F25-AV205: Screen flashed blue, I saw something about BIOS then it went black with a small white line cursor blinking in the upper left corner. Now when I turn it on it goes to the black screen with the small white cursor every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. patpace1@mchsi.com

One other item that may be important. If so, I apologize for leaving it out.
At the time of the failure, I was on the intenet and had clicked a Java update icon in the bottom right tray. Nothing seemed to happen for a few seconds so I continued browsing. The Java Icon then appeared in the middle of the screen, then the blue screen with a mention of BIOS .... and now only black screen when it gets turned on.

I do have access to a Philips SDVD8820 RW drive on another laptop and I am willing to create a boot disk try see if I can at least get it booted up. I don't think I have a Windows boot disk anywhere right now. I have XP as the OS.

    Thanks!

I found a Windows recovery disk from another laptop and tried it. I also created an iso image disk using the other laptop and tried it.

In both cases here is what happens:

    1. I put disc in

    2. Turn on computer

    3. QOSMIO flashes up on screen (it doesnlt seem to have time to do self test).

    4. CD light flashes yellow (like it is accessing??)

    5. black screen with small white cursor appears

Is there a way to force boot from the CD? I tried holding C key in while booting and tried holding "key to the left of spacebar" per Toshiba instructions. Holding C key during startup changed nothing. Holding the "key to the left of spacebar" during startup caused the computer tp starting beeping.

Hey
I know exactly what you mean with the blinking cursor. It comes right after the computer has done the self test routine and detected the memory, drives etc.
So it sounds like it doesn't find the hard drive - or its trying to start from the hard drive but its unable to.
You would have to use the windows installation disc for your machine or recovery disc to restore the machine to factory defaults. if that does not help or the hard drive is not detected, its most likely faulty, a new hard drive will cost around 50$ out of warranty.
It can be replaced quite easily from the bottom of the machine its under one of the covers that open with a few screws.
but if you are not experienced in computers, if you are just a normal home user and you don't have a windows installation disc or such didn't come with the computer, possibly the easiest way for you to get this fixed is to take it to a repairer. BUT if you want to fix it yourself of course I will provide you with instructions.
Let me know what you plan to do.

you would need to get a Windows XP Setup cd. Can you borrow one from somewhere?

  • Ekse Nov 13, 2010

you need to change the boot order in the bios, instructions here

Also while you are in the bios see if you can see the Hard drive listed there and its serial number etc details.

When you start a Windows Vista-based computer, the system may stop responding (hang) at a black screen.

Additionally, you may experience the following symptoms when you try to recover from this problem:

    • If you restart the computer, press F8 before the Windows Vista progress indicator appears, and then click the Safe Mode option, the same problem occurs.

    • If you start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to restore the Windows Vista-based computer, WinRE stops responding.

    • If you try to use Windows Vista installation media to repair the system, the system stops responding.

The power supply is failing and cannot provide the necessary power to charge and run the computer. You'll need to search the internet for a replacement power supply. You can potentially damage the computer if you continue to try to operate it like this.

I replaced the inverter on my qosmio f25 laptop but the screen is still black. A blog relating to an IBM laptop says the ID in the inverter EEPROM needs to be updated. Is this accurate for Toshiba and how...

There is no EEPROM in the inverter, the inverter is a power device that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp.
If power supply to the inverter is OK and the inverter is OK then the problem is a faulty CCFL lamp.
Check LCD Parts for replacement lamps, cost approx. $10
