PLease help-recurring problems with IXTREME 1907

I have now reached complete melting point and need help. I bought an IXTREME 1907 Packard Bell in October 2005 - it crashed spectactularly 10 days later & I was told I would need a new motherboard. I actually got the machine replaced - but have had nothing but problems with it.
It crashes every 4-6 months months - resulting in it being totally wiped and put back to factory settings each time.
I have had numerous reasons given to me for this - it was ITunes, it was one of the kids games.etc. Most recently (In February), I was told it was my Norton Antivirus - so I reaplaced it with McAfee.
9 weeks later - it happened again - this time I was told no-one could actually work out the problem - I have deliberately not loaded any games on and yet am having the same problems. It was put back to factory setting again (6th time) last week. This morning it crashed.
This time, the windows message told me to run a diagnostic as it thinks there is a hardware problem - yet I have 85% free space on my hard drive. I have a serious error report with windows that is literally 3 feet long. Could this actually be something to do with the machine ? If so, please could you giove me an idea of what it could be ? 3 independent computer shops and PC world have not been able to work it out. I have tried to contact Packard Bell, but not heard anything back!

Hi - the replacement machine was (supposedly) brand new - so everything in it should have been new.

    Thanks

Hope I am putting this in the right place for bigbiggs! The "big" crashes were blue screens - they would literally happen anywhere at any time. At first I thought it was connected to when I went into the internet, but then it started to happen within seconds of windows loading - finally ending up with a blue screen followed by nothing at all.

The most recent ones were the system just turning itself off and when I next put it on, i would get a serious error message. The error messages in the log vary.

    more recent ones were :

    18 June 2008
    System Error
    Error code 1000007f, parameter1 00000008, parameter2 bab40d70, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 00000000.

    .

There have been lots of others - but of course they get wiped everytime the system is reset!

Hi bigbiggs - we went through your instructions this morning - right after it shut itself down twice! The error logs looked like this :

    21 June 2008
    System Error
    Error code 1000000a, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 0000001c, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 805021af.

    21 June 2008
    System Error
    Error code 1000000a, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 0000001c, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 805021af.

    21 June 2008
    System Error
    Error code 10000050, parameter1 bf895501, parameter2 00000008, parameter3 bf895501, parameter4 00000002.

Welooked at everything in the list - the only thing that looked odd was something in BIOS set up which said :

    Max CPUID Value limit (Disabled)

The fan speeds etc were :

    Fan Speed 1591 max / 1569 min

    CPU Q Fan control (Enabled)

    CPU fan ratio 35%

    CPU Target Temp 75C

    It wouldn't crash!

    Thanks

One thing I have come accross Lately is we are using large amounts of Ram and I have found that one gig sticks or higher are failing at high temps. Recently I had a customer put four sticks of ram in thinking that he did not have enough memory when in fact the ram itself was overheating and shutting down. I recommend to my customers to spend a little extra and install heat sink kits on ram sticks one gig and higher. He did this and the problem went away. I agree with most of the comments it sounds like a heat problem to me. Good luck... Be mucho blessed...Mark

There are lots of things that could cause things like this to happen. I had a customer with a brand new pc, about 6 months that would crash etc that turned out to be the chip over heating and the person who built the pc had turned the chip overheat protection off. You need somebody who is willing to go through this machine step by step to find your problem.

Loading Linux? Would that really fix a obvious hardware failure?

I have never herd of itunes causing issues... It is true that kids install stupid stuff... but it is not always the reason.

Resets for no reason:

Look at the power supply. Make sure it isn't clogged with dust bunnies. Make sure its wattage can handle the gear in side. 400 watts + is a minimum with most of the systems these days.

Look at the computer motherboard. You will see cylinders about the size of a bic pen (for the round part) and 1/2 inch to 1 inch tall. Look at the top where there usually is a X. If it isn't flat on the top and is bulged out or looks like it may have leaked onto the botherboard... Your problem is most likely vented capacitors. The fix is to replace the motherboard or (if skilled) replace the vented capacitors. Preventative maintenance would keep this from happening. If there isn't enough air flow you will cook your computer till it is unstable. Venting capacitors is the result.

Hard Lock ups:
If the crash is a hard lock it could be air flow also. Check the CPU and Power supply. Make sure the fans move air and are not blocked with dust and crud. Check the fan on your video card (if it has one). This will cause a hard lock also.

hope this helps

What happens when U say crash, blue screen, error message? What was it doing just before the crash and did it do that same thing without crashing before?
What os is used? Does the Bios look ok?
Please reply with as much info and that will assist in troublshooting.

First lets start from the basic t/shooting. Power down and open the case. Vacuum or blow the mb, fans, power supply and ensure the heat-sink on the CPU is secure. Gently press all the connections to make sure they are connected. U can use an electronic spray cleaner if necessary, shake or blow any wet spots after. Check to make sure about the hd connections.

Boot the system up and press F2 to enter Bios on the bootup screen. Look over everything and check the power section to make sure the automatic sleep, hibernate or power down is turned off the entire system.... hd, display, everything on always. There may be a section for CPU tempature settings, check to make sure these are set to defaults. Temp could be a problem if the CPU cooking fan is not secure to the CPU or not running. While case is open and system is running, check the fans, CPU, case, powersupply, all of them.

Reboot the system and as windows comes up press F6 or spacebar to enter safe mode. See if U can get it to fail. U will be in VGA mode without internet, but try whatever U can to repeat failure.

If it fails or not let me know. If no fail, reboot to windows normal and attempt fail. Let me know either way.

Have you considered loading linux on the computer? Perhaps a live distro CD that doesn't need to be installed just to test it. It could be Microsoft related.

Since the machine is 3 years old, it most likely out of warranty. I suggest you consider buying a new computer.

Search for Notons or symantics, delete all files, Also Search for Mcaffee and delete all files. Get your money back and buy Antivirus that work without loading up your computers. I would assume you are running Windows 98SE. any other programs such as ME, will crash a Packard Bell. Good luck

Number one installed program that will make your computer go whacky is Limewire. Kids use Limewire to download free music. The problem is that I can name a file anything I want and pose it as a song. When you download it and open it you are in fact opening a virus. Norton nor McAfee will detect all of these. The is one popular one that will create a fold on you root C: drive calle VidX. If you have this folder there then you system is indeed infected. I would say you are getting viruses. There is also a free diagnostic utility that you can download and boot from a cd. Call Ultimate Boot CD. I would run it to check hard drive and Memory.
You stated that you had an error log about three feet long. Is it under applications or system. This would also give indication of were your problem is lying.

You need to UNINSTALL the drivers and not delete them if you had done so on the PC. If this wont help it is possible that the OS must be reinstalled after formatting of the drive and thereby the drivers can be installed.
