I have this problem and have been told the following.
You have to take 2 Cir clips off. one on the front which is achievable by opening up the spring that holds it in place. The second one is behind the front panel.
You need to take the top off first. Undo two screws on the back top. Then you can take the top off. Then take any detergent tray our and also the front control panel. Then you gain access to some screws which hold the front panel onto the chassis.
After you take the front panel off you can apparently access the rear cir clip and spring.
once this is removed you can remove the front seal for replacement.

You suspect right.
It is a complete strip down job. I have just finished mine.
taking apart and reassembling is not too dificult.but you need to make up a tool to remove and replace the bearings which are two different sizes. It consists of a lenghth of studding, bolts and washers.
Download the manual from LG.

it will definitely be the bearings and possibly the spider as well. the spider is attached to the bowl. the spider is made of aluminum and they corrode all the time. open the door to the machine and grab hold of the steel bowl, has it got movement on it. if it has then the spider and bearings are faulty, also the main shaft seal will need replacing.nearly every time i went to an LG 8013f that was noisy it was the bearings and or spider. hope this helps. please reply 4 more help. good luck.
