The CCFL tubes are practically immortal - the laptop itself will be dead long before them. If sometimes you get lightr that means that the inverter board is still operational and what you have is a bad wiring connection.
You will have to dismantle the lid and check the wiring and its connections.

How do I FIX FLICKERING sONY vAIO VGN-CS33G? You seem like a man who might be able to help!

This is symptomatic of a failing backlight, a failing inverter or a loose or damaged VGA cable. Or a failing graphics chip
To eliminate these: Plug the laptop into an external monitor and see if the signal you get is clear and flicker free. if it is, you can eliminate the graphics chip at least from the equation. ( I am assuming that you have already eliminated nearby magnetic field interference from speakers and the like?)
If the problem continues, you will need to investigate whether the GFX chip needs resetting (professional job) by a reflow or reballing.
If the image is steady on the external screen, you are left with the possibility of a loose or damaged VGA cable, a failing inverter or back light. The most likely cause is a chafed cable, to check this out and eliminate it, you will need to remove the screen bezel and the switchcover to check that the cable is free from splits or exposed wires that can happen over time. Check also the security of the cable at the motherboard socket and after removing the screen from the hinge supports, that the cable is firmly affixed in the back of the screen. If this does not cure the problem, the cheapest way of testing is to obtain a new inverter (oblong connector at the base of the screen with two connections ( ensure that you do not handle this when there is power from the mains adaptor or battery), check also for chafing cables and the security of the wires in the sockets. If replacement inverter does not work, your most likely cause will be the screen backlight tube and you may need to buy a new screen.

Backlight issue for an Acer Aspire 8730 It will turn on for anywhere from 1 to 6 seconds by use of the F6 function. It turns on and off turning the boot up process, but ultimately it stays off. I can see...

Hi,
Most of the times it is the back light issue (failing Inverter or the CCFL-Lamp). Acer Aspire 8730 has 2 lamps and it is highly unlikely that both of them fail together. Hence, I suspect the failing Inverter. Secondly, I have come across a few issues related to back light failing/ flickering etc, which were due to loose connections and LCD cable only. There are, I think, 3-4 connector (from motherboard to inverter- Inverter to lamp, Cable from motherboard to LCD for data) and 1 cable from the motherboard to the LCD. If there is any loosing or the cable is damaged, the back light flickers when you open or close the lid, however, when the Inverter or the Lamp fails the display is completely dark all the time. Furthermore, the Inverter supplies high voltage to the lamps, therefore, proper precautions should be taken while working inside LCD. If you are familiar with working/ troubleshooting such electronics, you may check for the loosing / faulty cable etc. and try to fix them yourself. Otherwise, if it is the faulty lamp or Inverter, it is highly recommended that you seek assistance from authorized professional for repair.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

My monitor has started going black at times. If I hold down the power button, I can turn off the computer and when I reboot the monitor seems fine and I can view everything and work. Sometimes the screen...

Please try to attach an external monitor & see if you can get any display on it. If you can get display on an external monitor, then the root cause of the problems you have might be either a failing LCD backlight or a failing inverter board.

Please refer to the following article for more details on how to diagnose & troubleshoot LCD backlight & inverter board issues:

Dell 1905fp No Display ( No Picture) on screen but Power Indicate light stays on green. Or Screen Flickering.

You have either power supply or inverter circuits failure, worst case will be lamps.
Most common failure in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed Dell monitors to get some ideas what goes wrong: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further.

THE SCREEN FLICKERS ALL THE TIME, HOW CAN I FIX IT

The screen flickering could be the screen inverter starting to fail. The inverter sits under the screen behind the bezel, it takes the low voltage DC power from the power adapter and converts it to high voltage for the screens backlight. If the inverter starts to fail, you either get a dim display that finally goes dark or get flickering like you see in some store lighting fixtures when the flourescent bulbs are failing.

After 5 minutes monitor screen dims--can faintly see the windows screen and then it flickers out and there is nothing. Any ideas?

the monitor may be going into power save mode which it should come out of when you press a key or move the mouse but it sounds like you have tube inverter issues. Your screen has light tubes behind it to illuminate the screen, if the tubes or the inverter develop a fault, then a very dark screen can result as the tubes are turned off. There may also be an ambient light sensor which will darken the screen in low ambient light. If the sensor is faulty, darkened screens will result. If the inverter is failing, you may be able to replace it, contact viewsonic. if the tubes are failing, replace the panel or the entire monitor. If the ambient light sensor is faulty, replace the panel or entire monitor as the sensor is part of the display panel.

My HP dv6000 laptop screen goes black suddenly, without warning. It is solid black if on battery power; if I have it plugged in to power supply, it is black with flickering white lines.

Your inverter is failing. Under battery power there is not enough DC power for the inverter to convert to High voltage AC power and it goes black. Even under charging, there seems to be evidence that the inverter is failing because there it is unable to consistantly convert the needed power. Check the cables on the back of the display and change your inverter.

Flicker then display goes black

your monitor got trouble at:
1) monitor inverter board components fail like capacitor or MOSFET diver, it can repair or change this parts to fix.
2) there is disconnection between the inverter and CCFL lamps
need to check by technician, it could be fixed,
3) check the DCpower supply board capacitors swelling which need to reaplace, and fix it.
all steps need to do and fix it well.
hope help you something fixed, please take a rating let me know how much helped you thanks! keep in touch your question
