Try to recover it from PC inspector File recovery - before formatting. Though, trying to format the disk will clear the data, and can be recovered by recovery tools only - try recovering it without formatting.

Unable to drag large files over from my computer onto MY BOOK

Fat32 is the predecessor of NTFS. There is no real difference apart from the transfer limitation, which you're experiencing.

Before proceeding, make sure you have backed up everything, you may have put on the drive.

Now, simply right click on the my book external drive in my computer and select format. You should get a popup window...The only thing that really needs to be changed within that window is the filing system (NTFS) and have the option "quick format" selected. Now select 'start' and within a minute or two your drive would have been formatted to NFTS.
