Question about Gateway 500XL PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a gateway 500xl that the previous owner reformatted the harddrive wiping the xp operating system. I've upgraded the ram but without an op system I cannot turn the machine on. I need to install another operating system but don't know how to get to the boot menu. Any ideas. I know someone knows. I'd appreciate the help.

Hi there.

For this process you will need:
1) The hard drive you want the operating system on.
2) The operating system disk (Windows, Linux, etc, depending on your os choice)
3) A CD/DVD drive.

Firstly you will need to enter the BIOS on startup by pressing the Delete key repeatedly as your system starts up. In the BIOS you need to locate the boot disk priority section. You need to set priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the hard drive you wish to install the operating system to. Once this is done save changes to the BIOS and exit. Your system should now restart and on boot-up it should display a message "Insert bootable disk" or something like that. This is where you put in the operating systems install disk into your CD/DVD drive. Once it is in restart your system. Now your PC should boot up and ask you to press "Enter" to boot form the CD/DVD. Press enter to proceed. The setup should now begin, just follow the steps given by the setup wizard. Once the setup is finished and your PC reboots and on startup you get the same message about pressing "Enter" to begin setup just do nothing. Your PC should then switch automatically to your newly installed operating system and boot into it. Once your PC is fully booted into your operating system of choice remove the setup disk.

How to bypass gateway administration password windows vista

If you haven't upgraded to at least Win7 when the upgrade was offered from Gateway for just a few dollars, you really blew it. You need to call Gateway and if unavailable, try to locate a new Win7 operating system CD-Rom from a shop that HASn"T been used. Install the Genuine Microsoft Win7 CD-rom, after you back-up your harddrive into an external harddrive and install the upgrade to Win7. (We tekkies don't even bother with VISTA anymore... it was an unstable operating system that Microsoft lost a ton of money on.) If you need to figure out how to back your harddrive in a non-working PC or laptop, check my very thorough post (it's long) for Gateway that won't boot up.

Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

I need operating system mine is lost its harddrive is dead, so i have new one

On the bottom of your tablet/PC you will see a COA sticker stating what version of windows was installed. You can download an image file from various sources on the web/torrents and install using your current license number. The drivers for XP are still available on the gateway website, however if you decide to upgrade to Windows 7 there are some advanced tricks you need to be aware of to install all the drivers, most of which are outlined in previous posts for your m275 tablet here on fixya. :) (I recieved 13 of these from a university science department that upgraded and have successfully re-installed both XP and win7 on all of them.)

I have a Gateway zx4351. Can I upgrade to a dedicated video card from my GeForce 9200?

It is possible... Yes.

Is it worth it... Maybe the ram upgrade to 8GB is worth the money...

Also, some all in one computers are very hard to even figure out how to open. You better make sure you can do it before you try. You also might want to check if opening the case voids your warranty too.

The drive for Gateway 500XL needs to be replaced.

1.The price you will pay depends on the size of the harddrive you install.
2. You can buy a 80gigabyte hard drive for 45 bucks up to a 1.5+ terrabyte size for $150+
3. What is the size hard drive are you replacing and was it enough for what you are doing or do you need more space than you had?
4. Whatever hard drive you install will be empty when you get it, therefore you need to use the recovery or operating system disks that came with your computer or buy a new operating system disk.
5. The new hard drive will also have to be partitioned and formatted, this typically is done by the operating system installation at the beginning, just follow the prompts.
6. Once you install the operating system , you will have to load any drivers for your motherboard , addin cards , printer , etc.
7. then comes all the updates , start with windows updates, then install your virus protection, spyware blockers , etc.
8, now download and install all the little things like adobe reader, flash player, java, etc.

I use tigerdirect.com for 99% of my computer hardware, they usually have the best prices for hard drives, are reliable, and have good support.

Unfortunately your going to have to pay someone to do this unless you can do it yourself. it's really not difficult, just takes some time and planning and a good internet connection on a second computer.

Hope this helps out.. Regards

Computer- reformat

In order for the computer to work, and for you to reformat the harddrive, you will need a bootable disk, either one which has a drive utility on it in order to reformat and partition the harddrive or an operating installation disk which includes a drive utility (any windows installation disk has it) - without one you will neither be able to properly reformat the harddrive nor install an operating system on it in order to use the computer.

As you have stated, this is obvious, and your problem is that you do not have an installation disk. A restore disk would not help if you reformatted the harddrive.

You can either purchase a Windows operating system disk, find one (no, not anything illegal - I have spare copies of windows and all of my geek friends have spare copies, because frankly of issues like this),

or download a copy of Linux and burn it to a cd - Ubuntu is a decent choice for a starting Linux user, and is very easy to use (works alot like windows, has tutorials, etc) and is completely free - you can do a search for Ubuntu Linux on google and you will be able to download a copy which can be burnt to disk or request a disk be sent to you, though I cannot remember if they still send free Ubuntu disks out.

Linux typically runs very well on limited resource computers such as the one you are in possession of. Did I mention it was free? If nothing else, you can use it to reformat the harddrive using their Live Boot disk - it allows you to use the Ubuntu operating system without installing it. You boot from the cd and can use their harddrive utility, or install Linux to the harddrive, or just check it out to see how it works.
