Have you tryed useing a memory card reader?

basicly remove the software again, i know you did it already.

Then reinstall it and only connect the camera when asked to.
also make sure its set on the correct mode for pc connection.

Have reloaded the Olympus master software on my Vista PC - but when I connect the camera the Master software doesn't find the camera.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program.

Lost the software to download my vivitar camera so i can take the pics off the camera and put onto computer. Where can I find the software to reload it?

You didn't state the model of your Vivitar camera so I'm assuming it uses a memory card of some type.

You don't need any special software.

Or, despite what I said earlier, you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

LCD screen displays menu items but will not display picture capture & won't take pictures

A very common problem with many Digital cameras. It sounds as if you are suffering from either a CCD problem or a video board problem. Impossible to tell without it being on the bench to check. You could dismantle it and check there's nothing adrift such as flat ribbon cables in their sockets or loose plugs and sockets between the printed circuit boards. Watch out for the flash unit it can give you a nasty shock if it's charged. Most cameras seem to built to last as long as the warranty and then die. This keeps you coming back for more. At least you were lucky to get 2 years out of yours before it passed on.
