I managed to figure out how to fix this.
-Open the side of your PS3 where your HDD is. Take the screw out, but leave the HDD in.
-Whenthe update begins, slide your HDD out of the slot. It will tell you an error occured and it tells you to restart your system and try again. Instead, let the count from 60 run out, your screen will go blank for aabout 30 seconds then it will start back up and tell you that your Hard Drive needs to be reformatted. Now, slide your HDD into place again, and continue with the format. You will lose all your saved data, but your console will work again.

If calling Sony and getting it replaced is out of the question. Then get a USB thumb drive or memory stick. Follow the download directions here http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3/pc_update.html#update_PC
You may have to do this a couple times, but it should work. I have brought 18 PS3 systems back to life because of this.

Man I tried everything from the hdd to the flash drive stick to popping the hard drive out after it starts and leaving the flash drive in thought I had it but when it got to 99% it just got stuck there. Did each over and over like everyone says to do but still nothing so now I have a big heavy paper weight and lucky me I missed the one year warranty by a couple of weeks and Sony was so nice to say sorry theres nothing we can do. I guess they feel $400 is chump change

If you have a 2.50+ version, you can repair your ps3.
connect your HDD to your pc, then initialize it.
Download your current firmware version in a usb key.
connect your HDD to your ps3
go to recovery mode. choose option 6: system update.
try to install your firmware -> error 8002F14E.
connect your HDD to your pc, initialize it.
The PS3 should format your HDD, and would start.
(but the problem is that I cannot update my ps3...)

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
