I have a windows xp, maxtor basics 250gb hdd...whenever i try to access it, it has no response and the comp hangs....after 15 sec a message appears sayin error performing inpage operation. it shows no other problems whatsoever
My external Hard Drive Maxtor 160GN shows error message as described above.I didn't drop it or shake it, it simply does not want to be recognized on my PC or laptop. Whenever I plug it in, my PC/Laptop does an 'Auto Search' for 5-8 seconds, and then displays the message: 'error performing inpage operation'. I have spent at least many hours trying to make my PC/Laptop recognize the drive. I simply don't know what could cause is. If anyone knows how to solve this issue please let me know. Any advise is greatly valued. Thanks Rgds Raja

Click Start, Click RUN and type cmd and Enter. You'll be in command window - then type chkdsk [drive:] /F (such as - "chkdsk e: /F") which should perform a repair. It will probably require a restart. Do not touch the keyboard during restart.
I'm confused. Is the maxtor drive 250GB? Have you partition it to 30GB? Or is it that the computer only reads 30GB instead of 250GB? Does this drive have Windows on it? Also you might want to check your BIOS (Motherboard input/output system) by pressing Del key or F12 and see if this drive is the startup Drive. If you don't have Windows on this drive, make sure it is NOT the startup drive. Hope this helps.
WD offers a recovery service, unfortunately that is going to be your cheapest option and that is a long shot and expensive. What happened is the Disk Read/Write arms are no longer in alignment from the impact or have broken free. Because of the need for a clean room environment to work on a HD it is very costly to get these repaired and well out of range for most everyday users.
try doing a F disk on the hard drive first then format it and make it the active drive and then try installing the xp software. if it has had another operating system say for instance windows ME it will not install on that drive without removing it. You can also go to www.maxtor.com and download their free hard drive tools to see if there is a problem that thier software can fix. the software is for free.
you can always try to mount the hdd using the windows disk manager. if nothing, and you want to back up your data from the drive boot up your pc with a live linux cd and attempt to mount that drive manually. If successful you can transfer your data from one drive to the other with no problems
1. I need to know the brand name , model number , or motherboard you have
2. I need to know what operating system you are using
and when you say open , in what manor do you mean open , in what way are you attempting to open the drive and with what program , so far it looks like you may need to reinstall the computers operating system from scratch , because something is dead wrong , and it looks like a file system error , as if your computer operating system is no longer able to access files properly.
I consider your situation unresolved at this time untill you can give me more information.
