Malware Part 1: Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Adware

Malwares or Malicious softwares are programs that are made intending to sabotage and destroy your computer or penetrate, spy and steal your information on your computer. These Malicious Software could be categorized into 5 major groups Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware and Adware. What, are the differences between these 5 types?

Viruses are programs that act like biological viruses. They replicate or make a copy of themselves in another host. Using an infected host, like USB Flash disks or drives, viruses infect your computer and wait until you insert another flash disc to infect. While waiting in your computer, viruses, depending on their code, could either slow down the system, mess up your file system, or even destroy your files.

Trojans are programs that do not replicate or copy themselves. Trojans are software that are made by would be hackers to spy on your computer and create what they call back doors. These programs are intentionally placed on your computer directly, where there is physical contact with the computer, or indirectly, where a copy is sent through your Email or even by an infected Flash Drive. The trojan would then be on your computer but it will neither replicate nor crawl to other computers connected to the infected computer.

Worms, on the other hand, are the ones that have the capability to crawl to any computer connected to the infected computer. Worms infect computers through the local network and even through the public networks. Worms infect others by scanning your network and infecting any computer connected to your network. Other Worms would scan your email software for email addresses and send a copy of themselves to your contacts and act like it was sent by you. Worms also have the capability to destroy your files depending on the code programmed into it. Worms also has the effect of slowing down your network speed since it would scan your network and send copies of itself. Worms eat up a lot of bandwidth in a network.

Spyware and Adware are almost the same. The difference of these two is the intent and the usage. Spyware as its name implies is used to spy your computer for any vulnerabilities. Adware on the other hand is used to constantly bug you with Advertisements. Normally known as Unwanted Pop-ups. Both, however, can infect you by websites, that without your permission, that copy or install these unwanted software into your computer. Spyware and Adware, are sometimes also considered as Trojans by other Antivirus Software since it does not replicate or crawl in the network but does damage to your computer.

Whichever type, these Malicious Software, is harmful to your computer and is a threat to your personal security. It is best to be able to early detect these software and be able to purge them out of your system. As prolonged, exposure to these Malicious Software is very damaging which could cause you to lose your data.

In Malware Part 2: Malware Detection and Removal, we will discus how to detect malware and some basic techniques in removing these Malicious Software.

An evil. ambiguously named virus disguised as a virus protection had completely taken control of my computer. How do I get rid of it?

This is a conficker

Supposedly there are over 50,000 possible websites the conficker worm will try to contact when it activates, and there may be thousands of botnet computers that are passing it on to whoever is suckered into visiting those websites. But it has done nothing more than install itself and try to prevent its removal - and that will interfere with your use of the computer. What it does when it activates is unknown at this time.

People who have illegal or cracked copies of Windows XP or Vista cannot get critical updates from Microsoft and so they are the ones most likely to be constantly infected and affected.

If the Conficker worm is on a computer it can infect any USB drive plugged into it, and then when that USB drive is plugged into another Windows computer that has AutoRun enabled, the worm will infect the computer.

Make sure your computer has all of Microsoft's critical updates installed.

You can read what Wikipedia has to say:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conficker

Microsoft has short technical article here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal...

You can use Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (if you have it) to scan your drive and USB drives for the files the worm uses and delete them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malicious_s...

Click Start
Click Run
Type MRT
Press Enter.
.
Download MRT from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

Hello!

It seems you've been infected, almost anything can be solved by using Maleware Byte's anti malware program,Link here http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Its important to not do anything that the so called "Security Tool" tells you to do,i.e send personal information or buy a program that claims to fix the problem, most of these viruses try to sell you an anti-virus/malware program !

Hope this helps!

Laptop infected with worm.

Nortons sucks. you should try an anti-virus scan with Malwarebytes, then you should install Avast as your resident protection.

Be sure, when uninstalling Nortons, to use the uninstallation tool found on the nortons site. if you use the regular windows uninstaller, it will not remove all of it, and it will slow your computer down.

Your system is infected by Sasser worm. The Sasser worm infects machines via network connections. It can attack entire networks of computers or one single computer connected to the Internet. The worm exploits a known windows vulnerability that is easily patched, however few systems seem to have this patch installed. It attacks Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines along with Windows NT and Windows Server 2003.

The patch from Microsoft known as the MS04-011 Security Update fixes the following vulnerabilities:
LSASS Vulnerability
LDAP Vulnerability
PCT Vulnerability
Winlogon Vulnerability
Metafile Vulnerability
Help and Support Center Vulnerability
Utility Manager Vulnerability
Windows Management Vulnerability
Local Descriptor Table Vulnerability
H.323 Vulnerability
Virtual DOS Machine Vulnerability
Negotiate SSP Vulnerability
SSL Vulnerability
ASN.1 “Double-Free” Vulnerability

Download the Windows patches for this vulnerability. Here is the link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx

How Can I Remove the Sasser worm?

Follow these steps in removing the Sasser worm.

1) Disconnect your computer from the local area network or Internet

2) Terminate the running program
Open the Windows Task Manager by either pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, selecting the Processes tab or selecting Task Manager and then the process tab on WinNT/2000/XP machines.
Locate one of the following programs (depending on variation), click on it and End Task or End Process

avserve.exe
avserve2.exe
skynetave.exe
any process running with the "_up.exe" suffix
Close Task Manager

3) Activate the Windows XP Firewall (if running Windows XP) or another firewall to prevent the worm from shutting your system down while downloading the patches. To activate the Windows XP firewall, follow these steps.
Click on Start, Control Panel
Double-click on Networking and Internet Connections, then click on Network Connnections
Right-click on the connection you use to access the Internet and choose Properties
Click on the Advanced Tab and check the box
"Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
Click OK and close out of the Network and Control Panel

4) Remove the Registry entries
Click on Start, Run, Regedit
In the left panel go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
In the right panel, right-click and delete the following entry

"avserve.exe"="%Windir%\avserve.exe"
"avserve2.exe"="%Windir%\avserve2.exe"
"skynetave.exe"= "%Windows%\skynetave.exe"
Close the Registry Editor

5) Delete the infected files (for Windows ME and XP remember to turn off System Restore before searching for and deleting these files to remove infected backed up files as well)
Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders.
Make sure that "Look in" is set to (C:\WINDOWS).
In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, type, or copy and paste, the file names:

avserve.exe
avserve2.exe
skynetave.exe
C:\win2.log
Click Find Now or Search Now.
Delete the displayed files.
Empty the Recycle bin

6) Reboot the computer and update your antivirus software, and run a thorough virus scan using your favorite antivirus program.

For Automatic Removal of Sasser, download the Symantec removal tool, you'll still need to download the patches above and install them, however this removal tool will stop the Sasser worm from running, remove the items in the registry, and delete the infected files.

You may want to look into this. This may be your issue with AVG anti virus. The Conficker worm mostly spreads across networks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware’s creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other computers on the same network.
