We can't get our hot tub to heat. The heater light comes on but the heater still won't heat.

heating elements are resistors that get hot
one end will have 115 volts but the other end should be considerable less because the resistance of the heating element drops the voltage
if you used a ohm meter you should be reading a resistance of 500-1000 ohms for a good heater element but with your readings , there will be no resistance so the element is faulty

Electric water heater only heating small amount of water

There are top and bottom elements on hot water tanks. The bottom one usually burns out first, it can be replaced, they cost about $30. Some are immersible some are wrap around. Disconnect the power. Open the bottom cover for the element, cut the insulation, remove both wires and test with a meter to see if you have approx. zero ohms. If you have high ohms readings, then the element is pouched.

Hot water element

Make sure wires are removed from element when ohm-testing.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html
Watt and voltage rating of element appears on end of each element.
Volts squared divided by watts = correct ohm testing.
Two-element water heaters are rated for 240Volts, but can be wired for 120Volts.
Check that water heater is receiving power from circuit breaker box.
So if breaker is 2-pole 240Volt, then check that heater is receiving 240 V across top two screws on upper element.
Replace upper element.

Excessive water temperature. replaced thermostat and ECO.

Water heaters have 2 basic parts: thermostat and element.
If thermostat checks out, then element is next suspect.

Test element.
Buy cheap multimeter at home center. Install battery.
Set multimeter to read ohms.
Take wires off element.
Test each screw to bare metal part of water heater.
Test each screw to any metal part of element except other screw.
If meter shows any ohms, then element is shorted to ground.
The ohm meter needle can move just a small bit if the ground fault is small.

I wonder also if you have the thermostat wired correctly.
6 gallon water heater is 120V, with one Hot wire and one Neutral wire.
If Hot wire is on wrong side of thermostat, then element would have power at all times.

We installed a brand new Reliance Electric Hot Water Heater, but no hot water, only lukewarm! Replaced top heating element and still no hot water!! Any suggestions as to what we need to do now?

If you have some hot water from dual-element water heater, then that tells us:
Water heater is 240Volt.
Upper element is working. If upper element is not working, then heater has NO hot water.
Reset button is not tripped.
Electricity and breaker to water heater are delivering 240Volts to heater.

Remaining suspects are:
1) Bad upper or lower thermostat: Solution: replace both thermostats for 28$.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html
2) Bad lower element: Solution test and replace element:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-water-heater-element.html
3) Loose wire or loose connection: Solution: open both covers and inspect for burning. Tighten all screws very tight.
4) Bad wire: Solution: Buy cheap multimeter from Home Center and do a 30 minute troubleshoot of entire water heater before replacing any parts:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html
When testing for voltage, rotate multimeter dial to 240-250-277VAC
When testing elements or continuity, rotate multimeter dial to Ohms.

Water may stay hot for 5 minutes then gets cold. water heater often blows breaker or pop out switch.

I suggest taking 30 minutes and testing water heater parts.
Right away we know 2 things:
-Electricity to heater is good.
-Upper element is receiving power because you have some hot water. If upper element was burned out, you would have no hot water.

That leaves 5 suspects:
Upper thermostat.
Lower thermostat.
Loose or shorted wire.
Upper element shorted to ground near center of element.
Lower element shorted or damaged in some manner.

Buy $10 milti-meter from Home Center or hardware
When test calls for testing voltage, rotate multimeter dial to 240-250-277 VAC.
When test calls for testing elements or continuity, rotate multimeter dial to Ohms.
Take 30 minutes and go down page.
Test will identify problem(s) and show how to fix it yourself.

I have replaced the bottom element, and now i have no hot water. I check with a meter and have power to the top element but not the bottom one.

First of all, you have 240V water heater because tank has two elements.
You have no hot water, and tank has power to upper element.
Lower element has no power.

Something doesn't sound right.
You're not testing correctly.

Before doing anything, test across top two screws of upper element for 240Volts.
This will eliminate electrical problem as suspect.
Breaker must deliver 120V on both legs to complete the 240V circuit.
Every single-phase household circuit takes 2 wires to complete the circuit.
With 120V you need 1 neutral wire and 1 hot wire to complete circuit.
With 240V you need 2 hot wires, one from each hot busbar, to complete circuit.
Your water heater can appear to have electricity if breaker is delivering power on one leg of the 240V circuit.
To check breaker for sure, move wires to another similar size breaker to see if water heater functions properly.
http://waterheatertimer.org/B220C.html

If 240V circuit is good, then next thing is take 30 minutes and do full test of water heater parts.
This will identify exact problem(s) without guessing.
Buy 5$ multimeter from Home Depot. Install battery.
When test calls for continuity, rotate dial to Ohms (upside down horseshoe is ohms).
When test calls for testing voltage, rotate dial to 240-250-277 VAC

Bought reliance 602 50 gallon electric hot water heater 4 years ago and it stoped heating bought new upper and lower elements and new upper and lower thermostat and still no hot water power goes to all...

did you turn the breaker on ? before filling the tank ?the water tank must be completly full before turning on. the new elements will blow if not submerged in water ..if you have 240 volts at the element and its not heating one is out .only one element can be on at a time so you really need an amp prob to test element .try an ohm meter an check resistance ,sounds like one element is out .hope this helps good luck /P/Swhen filling tank. open a hot water valve, on tub or faucet to remove air while filling the tank. you will hear the air coming out of faucet. when water comes out its filled..

Hot water does not last long. Model 82vh40-2 mnf. 05/2005

If the lower heating element burns out the upper element will heat the top part of the tank then shutoff. homw depot/lowes etc should carry elements. 1 turn off breaker, remove element access cover (the 2 panels on the front of the heater) test for electricity at the reset button ( uppermost device in upper panel) to make sure power is off. 2 turn off water (I usually turn off the cold water main to stop water cross feeding into hot supply line back into heater) 3 disconnect the 2 wires on the lower element, test with continuity tester. shhould be no continuity between terminals and tank, but around 10 ohms between the 2 terminals. Check the thermostat for continuity if tank is cold thermostat should be closed ie zero ohms across the 2 terminals.
If stat is bad replace stat; disconnect wires push it up out of the spring clip insert new stat reconnect. If element is bad: drain tank. connect garden hose to tank drain valve, open tank drain valve turn water main on to clear rust sediment and get water flowing. Next remove filter screen from a hot water faucet then turn on ( a hot faucet upstairs or higher than tank drain). Now turn water main off, air will now go in through hot faucet and tank will drain, takes about an hour. Use a water heater element wrench about$10 to remove element(s) make sure no bits of rubber gasket are left in element opening- dig em out with a screwdriver if needed. Insert new element with its gasket and tighten. reconnect wires DO NOT TURN ON ELECTRICITY! BE SURE TO FILL WATER HEATER WITH WATER ! Turn water main back on -air will come out of the hot faucet for several minutes. When water runs without any air sputtering, turn off faucet and replace the faucet filter screen. check element(s) for leaks. turn breaker back on.
