Dishes on both levels are left with a cloudy film that requires them to be hand washed. Can you tell me why?

Could be too much rinse agent. Most dishwashers have an adjustment on the dispenser. Set it to the lowest setting while still preventing water spotting. If you use the tablets, you may be getting a double dose of rinse agent, as the tablet have rinse agent built in, plus the dispenser will add the normal amount = 2 x required amount.
Another thing is the phosphate levels of detergent. With zero phosphates allowed now, you see more of this. Try a product called "Lemi shine" made by envirocon. It is a citric acid based powder. Add about 1/3 to 1/2 Lemi Shine, the remainder the regular amount of POWDERED dishwasher detergent.

Hard water Calcium white powder build up in dishwasher

Calcium and magnesium is present in a great number of homes today regardless of hardness or softness of the water. Water containing dissolved carbonates of calcium and magnesium can lower the effectiveness of the detergents you use and leave deposits on the dishware and tub of the dishwasher. When these deposits dry they become what some call lime scale.

To remove these deposits there are a number of cleaners on the market today. I will list them in the order of my preference. You can find them near the dishwasher detergents. If you use them read the instructions on the label, but basically you can run a cycle with no dishes and the cleaner. Some of the cleaners like Lemi-Shine can be used with a full load of dishware after you clean the tub. This helps keep the tub clean and deposits off the dishes. If you want a home remedy that seems to work pretty good, put a cereal size bowl upright in the lower rack (no other dishes in the dishwasher) fill the bowl with vinegar and run a normal cycle. The vinegar will wash out and clean some of the deposits away. If residue is still around run a second cycle of the vinegar wash.

General Dishwasher cleaning

There are 3 types of energy used to clean the dishes a balance of all three are needed for the best results.

Chemical Energy - The detergent you use plays a big role in the cleaning ability. Phosphates do a great job but as new regulations come into play phosphates are being phased out. Detergent can get 'old' and loose it's cleaning ability. It has a short life span, so buy detergent in small quantities. If you have hard water you will need to use more detergent or even an additive like lemi shine or Glass Magic to assist with the chemical energy. Detergents for automatic dishwashers have a no sudsing agent to reduce foam and suds. Rinse aid plays an important role in eliminating spots and drying the dishes, yes drying. The rinse agent helps sheet the water off the dishware prior to the dry cycle, there is a product called Turbo Dry that can be used in place of rinse agent that works great for drying plastic. In summary use detergent like Cascade or Electrosol and a rinse aid

Thermal Energy - Hot water is important for both dissolving/activating detergent and breaking down food residue so it can come clean from the dishware. It will help to run the hot water faucet at the kitchen sink until hot before starting a cycle in the dishwasher. If cleaning is a problem use the Pots and pans or High Temp wash

Mechanical Energy - This is done by water pressure against the dishware, be sure to load properly, do not stack or shadow other dishware, be aware of where the spray arms on your dishwasher and make sure you do not block them when loading. If you have a filter in the unit, clean it often, if you do not you may still need to clean out the sump on occasion. The spray arms may get food or deposits in the small jets (holes) that the water needs to come out. Inspect and clean as needed.

Just does not get dishes and GLASSES clean..so frustrating

If you are having hard water issues, there isn't much your dishwasher or dish soap/rinse aid can do about that--regardless of what some salesperson told you was installed into the machine. You either need a water softener or some type of filtration system established at whole home point of use.

Overnight, the dishes have a cloudy "scum" on them after washing

The problem is hard water. www.dishwasherfilter.com has a product to solve this problem once and for all. It filters the water going into your dishwasher and removes the hard minerals that leave those spots. It is very affordable and even has a money back guarantee. You will love the way your dishes look with this product.

Maytag dishwasher

Go buy a product called Lemi-shine and run it thru your dishwasher empty to clean out any hard water and soap deposits. If you can try using only about 2 table spoons of detergent and stay clear of the premeasured tablets. Most of the dishwashers being sold are low water usage units and it is very easy to overwhelm them with soap. It also helps if the oils from the foods are still on the dishes. People tend to clean the dishes to much before loading them and then the enzymes in the detergent have nothing to attach to. Basically this leaves the soap nothing to attach to except the dishes and hence you get cloudy dishes with soap stuck all over them.

If the lower and upper spray arms do not turn what could be the problem? I have a MDB4100AWB and I of course have hard water in our area and wondering what is causing the spray arms to turn.

could be the plastic shaft extension that screws onto the motor shaft to drive the pump. The threads on the plastic extension would sometimes get stripped out so that even though the motor is running, it isn't driving the pump mechanism. Assuming the dishwasher is filling with water and motor is running during the wash cycle. also check spray arm openings to make sure they aren't plugged up.

Glasses have milky film after running the dishwasher.

This "milky-like" film is hard water build up in your dishwasher that is depositing it back onto your dishes. To solve this you can get the product called Lemi-Shine at any store or on line. The first time you need to put about 2 heaping table spoons into the dishwasher with no dishes in it and run a normal cycle. Then load and put 1 table spoon in it for about 4 times and you will see the "milky-like" film go away. After that you will need to do a Lemi-Shine cleaning 1 a week. The Lemi-Shine has the directions on the container. I know this cause I use to have the same problem at my house and this works. Good luck. And thank you for the question.
