Bill,
There is no one better than you who knows what is important to you. There is no software that can tell you what is good for you. Microsoft has tried to do that by giving you folders like My Documents, My music, My Videos etc. All these contain the data that you need and use every once in a while. Back them up in toto. Also back up the Windows Registry and settings that are important to run Windows on your PC/laptop. And to do all this Windows has given you a BACKUP tool in Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Backup. Please connect your external new HDD to the computer and use this tool. It is a wizard that keeps asking you questions. Just keep answering and you cant go wrong at all. All the best.

I want to take some programmes my hard drive and use them in my external hard drive.

There are essentially two types of data that are written to a harddrive.
1. Programs (such as Microsoft Excel) 2. Data that are created by the Programs (XLS files)
In order to "move" PROGRAMS, they have to be first uninstalled from the original harddrive; then reinstalled onto your external harddrive.
In order to move DATA, simply do a copy and paste from the original drive to the new drive.

New computer/ Lost Seagate operating instructions

Just plug it in and the pc should detect it as a external HDD and show up as one of the drives. You can copy all the data to it and transfer it to your new PC.

The computer no longer sees my 320 gb hard drive, do i need to download new drivers? if ao where do i find them. i store all my photo's and music on this hard drive

Possibilities:
1. dead USB port on your computer -- try another port
2. try a different USB cable
3. try your external drive on some other computer, to see if it works at all
4. open the casing, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive, thus bypassing that adapter, to see if the adapter has failed, or if the disk-drive itself has failed
5. Google-search for a commercial "data recovery service" -- such companies can disassemble your disk-drive, and fix it, just long-enough to copy all your photos/music onto a brand-new disk-drive.

Data disappeared overnight

I've seen a lot of flack about these puppies lately. It's usually due to the external enclosure, the harddrive is in, and not the harddrive itself.

It is for this reason, that I suggest that you take the harddrive out of this enclosure, and install it into a decent, affordable, new external enclosure.
External enclosures are relatively cheap!

The harddrive inside the Maxtor One Touch II is a desktop size harddrive. It's a 3.5 inch one.
(3 and a half inches across in width)
It is a Sata harddrive.

These are examples of external enclosures for a Sata 3.5 inch harddrive,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2780&name=3.5-eSATA-enclosure&Nav=|c:2778|&Sort=0&Recs=10
(My recommendation would be the Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360 Su-BL)

This external enclosure has instructions, is easy to install the harddrive, and uses a USB cable just like your old one.

dont copy any data from or too the disk then use recover software. like Recover My Files, and if you copy any data to that disk it will damage the data you want.
