Question about Fantom Drives 120 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

When I plunged in FANTOM firewire and USB external HD (I only use the USB) at windows start it said it wanted to (blue screen) check drive for errors. I agreed and it stopped half way at 41% and did not go any further. I restarted computer and has not been able to read from external drive. Not recognised it says. Can you help please. It worked fine all these times on my XP desk top. This happened after I connected to my laptop which uses VISTA, then I again connected back to my desk top. Will not work even on VISTA

It is entirely possible that your external hard drive is failing. I would recommend downloading Seatools for Windows (link below) and run extended hard drive test on it. Chances are if it is failing, it still recognizes within the system, but it is not readable enough for windows to display it and allow you to browse.

Is this an inbuilt drive or an external drive? If you're using USB, it needs a USB connection. It shouldn't need drivers as the computer will automatically detect a hard drive.

Have you tried connecting to a completely different computer to see if that recognised it?

Ext 500G Fantom HD turns on but won't boot up.

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the flash drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your flash drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your Hard Drive to be detected automatically.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem

Hope this helps you out.

Goodluck!

My external hd blue light just flashes and i dont have access.

Do you connect via USB or firewire? Can you / have you tried another connection method?
Does it sound like the disk is spinning normally, or is it making a heap of clunking noises or not spinning?
The most common problem (assuming it has power, which it obviously does because it has a blue light), is the USB cable. Do you have another that you can try?
Let us know how you go with that and we'll continue...

Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.

USB Connection Problems

You say have a SanMax HD-338-CB USB/Firewire External HD with a 160MB drive. You then say sometimes I have to reboot Windows XP pro 2 or 3 time before I see the drive using a USB 2.0 connection. Fire wire is a different system with a different connector style- so it should not be in a USB port or a USB connector should not be in a Firewire device. Get you device and connections sorted The desktop display simply puts up a device it will not differentiate which USB or Firewire

you may take out the drive and connect it directly to your computer using it's IDE cable to check if the HDD still work. This will help you check if the problem was caused by the enclosure or if the HDD is already defective.
