What you need is to install a Ethernet card or LAN card in your PC so you can connect it to the dlink router using a network cable.

you might have to open up your network connections click start control panel network connections this may vary depending on your operating system look for local area connection if you see a red x or a yellow exclamation or question mark you will need to update or install the driver or it could be firewalled
make sure your modem/routers settings are correct ie:password user name, firewall settings to allow your internet to connect also test the lead/s whether usb or ethernet you might check your modem first to make sure that you are getting a connection
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll down network adapters + expand Ethernet driver you might see a yellow question mark? This means you need to update the driver right click you will have options to update driver disable uninstall or select properties general you will have the options to troubleshoot or to update driver rollback or uninstall
a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver right click to install driver
last resort ring your ISP internet sevice provider get them to check your modem for internet access online
hope this helps

Hate to sound dumb, but have a new Soney lap top and can not find place to plug in telephone cable so that I can go on line. Have several other computers and each has places to plug in the wall to the...

Does it have a modem? I'm thinking you probably do not have a modem ... dial ups are generally a thing of the past. Fewer and fewer computers come with modems built in, deferring to a network (NIC) connection or wireless connection. A NIC connection looks like a telephone connection but the NIC (Network Interface Card) has 8 conductors while a modem would have only 4 or 6. Warning, NEVER plug a NIC into a telephone outlet. A NIC operates at a very low voltage ... if the phone rings while your computer is plugged in ... there will be a puff of smoke as 60 volts enter your computer ... guess what is next ...

If you have several computers and are presently taking turns plugging the computers in for a dial up ... I would suggest to you it it time for a wire or wireless network in your home. That way you can have all of your computers share your conenction ... though I will tell you in advance, your connection speed will be severly hampered due to the current speed limit of about 56,000. Cable, fIOS or DSL lines operate in the millions of bits. If you have this type connection ... you still need a modem ... just add a router to build your network, but you dont need individual computer modems.

If you are interested in building a network ... you will need a wire/wireless router and a modem. You would control the modem from a computer and you would install connection sharing from within that computer. This will allow the networked computers to share the connection you have. It similar to a client - server network in that one computer controls and then shares the conneciton with other computers. ... still it would be a peer top peer network (no computer is superior to any other computer)

Im starting to ramble ... if you are interested in a network ... research the topic and if you get stuck, post a question. There are lots of network "expert" volunteers who roam these virtual hallways.

Do you mean your cell phone? If your phone is capable, there is a x to USB cable that will allow the connection.

HP laptop shows full internet signal, wont let me connect

First, the "Network Cable Is Unplugged" - don't worry about that. That is just informing you that your WIRED connection is unplugged, which is fine because you are using wireless.

Now the actual issue of no internet...first try by unplugging your internet modem for 20 seconds, and plugging it back in. Next do the same with your wireless router. At this point your computer will disconnect form the wireless network and you may need to reconnect it. After the reconnect see if you still have the same issue, but chances are it should be fixed :-)

If that does not work let me know and we can further troubleshoot the issue!

Connection Cable Unplugged Realtek RTL8139/810x

I got the same NIC (Network Interface Card) a few weeks ago, and my connection has been dropping out as well. I've tried different versions of drivers, but without success. I was playing around with the NIC's settings, and this is how I fixed the problem.

Right click on "My Computer"
select "Properties" from the list
select the tab named "Hardware"
click on "Device Manager"
expand the tree item named "Network Adapters"
right click on the Realtek RTL8139 and select "Properties" from the list
go to the "Advanced" tab
Select "Link Speed & Duplex Mode"
On the drop-down menu to the right, select "10M Full mode"
Click "Ok"
close out of Device Manager and My Computer properties.

The problem should be solved. The only disadvantage to this is that speeds on a local network will be slow on this computer, or if you're lucky enough to have a +10 meg line straight to your house.

Hope I helped,
Daniel

We are using software called Brainware Columbus to do Remote OS Deployment, Software Deployment & Remote Support. We have had LANDesk installed on all our computers, and since we uninstalled LANDesk and installed McAfee 8.7i Enterprise, we have had some difficulties with some computers where they show they are connected to our Wired Lan, but their IP settings have dissappeared, the settings are blank. When you click on the repair option for the network, it gives an error straight away, and we have also tried Uninstalled & Reinstalling the NIC, that also doesnt solve the problem. Please help
