Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore-Whirlpool top loading washing machine, Model #11049722990. It works fine, but makes a screeching noise at the end of the spin cycle. What is the most likely cause of the problem, ad how do I repair it? Thanks in advance!

I think that it does this after the motor shuts off and as it is slowing down and coming to a stop. It has a high pitched to a stop. It has a squealing-screeching type of sound to it.

Since it works OK, what are the consquences of continuing to use it as is? And how do I replace the brake?

First of all, I can only quess without hearing the noise first hand. I suspect that the brake on the motor is slipping. Does it do this after the motor shuts off on the spin cycle or is the motor still running? If it's after it shuts off I would suspect the brake. The coupling to the motor and transmission may also be going bad. I would have a tech check these items first. I can't think of anything else this might be. The couplings and agitator tabs wear out on these and cause simmilar problems

Then the only thing I can think of is the brake mechanism. I had a repair earlier this year on mune and when they were done the brake stopped the drum with a loud thump and before there was a slight squeal to the machine when it was stopping. I would have the brake checked to make sure it is working correct and like I said before, you should have them check the coupling and agitator tabs to save yourself another service call. I hope this helps.

I would not worry too much if the noise is bearable. Here are a few more tips on the brake and clutch and cover removal
Check the clutch If its cracked or got bent or inner clutch pin is got loose or broken then in spin cycle you will hear a loud noise. Also problem related to dragging brake shoes. To verify this you need to remove the parts. Just pull agitator, loosen the spin basket nut 1/2 way out and pound on the top of nut till the spin basket breaks loose. Now pull motor out and turn the tranny coupler clockwise untill the basket starts to spin, if now its very hard to turn with one hand, you have dragging brake shoes. Now pull transmission out and pry down the brake shoes, but leave the spin tube in the washer. Now remove the spring, cam and brake shoes and replace them. The other possibility is faulty motor coupler that is rubbing the inner metal and parts causing noise,in this case the motor and motor coupler needs to be checked and replaced. Kenmore Model 925 75 110 washing machine makes loud noises when the spinning cycle ends (as it stops spinning). Any ideas? Ease of repair ?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

There is also an excellent PDF document from Whirlpool describing how Direct Drive washers work.$FILE/L-55.pdf

We has the same basic problem with a Kenmore direct drive washer. At the end of the spin cycle we heard a loud noise as the brake stopped the drum from spinning.

Sometimes, what can happen is that the brake will grab the brake drum, like a brake on a car suddenly locking a wheel.

The brake is supposed to slow down and stop the drum without locking.

We were able to spray a small amount of silicone spray inside the brake drum, which allowed the shoes to more gently grab the drum.

See GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission.

Remove the cabinet and look at the drum directly above the silver colored clutch assembly.

Using an spray can of silicone spray, and a directional tube, spray a very small amount into the brake drum.
