Error c:31:23 keeps flashing on my sony digital camcorder. i also have a piece of with a black rubber surrounding that fell out of the camera could anyone tell me what this could be. how it cud have fallen out. thanks

Oops! That part belongs inside the tape drive - it's probably a tape post. You'll need to have it repaired - the error you're getting is a mechanical error. Which make sense because a part is missing.

Because of the black rubber part you have that problem so now you need to find one and insert on the bottom part of you tape deck for your camera to work.
well this has been sitting for some time now. but the solution would be wd40! well the straw off of it really, put your roller on and then cut a peice the straw sometimes a can of air staw works to and carefully slide it on.
This seems to be related to the black rubber roller inside the camera, either falling off or losing the bushing and getting too loose. It's an easy fix once you figure out where to look I just fixed this problem by referring to this link: http://wvstephens.blogspot.com/2008/05/sony-handycam-c3123-3123-error-easy-fix.html
His solution says to use a compressed air straw to make a new bushing. This was too small for me, but I looked around and found a little extension straw that was the right diameter. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of Sony camcorders. Google Sony C31:23 for more info.
I bought a "for parts" dscw50 off ebay & unscrewed the side panels; this allowed me to remove the whole top panel (entire silver piece) & exhange it with the one on my own camera which I had broken the shutter button off of. Works fine now.
I have been fighting the same problem. I just now picked up the camera and a small rubber roller fell out of the tape door area. I was not sure where it came from but looking closer there are 4 small rods sticking up on the right side inside the area where the tape is located. It looked like this was where the roller went so I placed it on the center rod and replaced the tape. This solved the problem and I am now able to view and recored as before. There most likely is a part that has either fell or broken off or is loose inside the tape area.
Have had exactly the same problem. Whacking the camera did not work and a roller has also fallen out, Did you manage to fix it ?. This camera cost loads when I bought it in dec 2002, wonder if it is worth fixing.
