Question about HP Deskjet 6940 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

HP Deskject 6940 - when ink in a cartridge was low, I a window used to pop up telling/showing me how much ink is left. This window does not pop up anymore. They only way I can tell the ink is low is when I'm printing and the colors are way off. I tried your "fix" above but I don't have a "Service This Device" setting in the Preferences. I've spent quite some time trying to find a info on how to restore this pop up window. Also, I used to be able to lift the lid and the window would pop up showing me how much ink was left in each cartridge. Thank you. Michelle

How do i check the ink level on my 6940 inkjet printer ?

  1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:
    • Open HP Solution Center , select Settings , and then Printer Toolbox .
    • If the HP Solution Center method does not work, open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel, then right-click the printer icon and choose Printing Preferences . Click the Features tab, and then click the Printer Services button.
  2. The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows otherwise. (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink.

My hp deskjet 6940 inkjet printer doesn't show me level of ink in cartridge

Print a diagnostic page If the steps above have not helped, print and evaluate a diagnostic page to see if the cartridges or the printer is causing the problem.
  1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and then press the Cancel button. Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints. Figure 1: Power and Cancel buttonsc00584735.gif 1 - Cancel button 2 - Power button
Step 4: Note which cartridges printed which areas of the diagnostic page You must identify which cartridge printed which part of the diagnostic page, so that if you find defects on the page, you will know which cartridge is the problem. However, you can install different combinations of print cartridges in your printer, and different cartridge combinations print different diagnostic page patterns. Your diagnostic page may not look exactly like the picture below, but the right and left cartridges will print in the same areas of the page no matter which cartridges are installed. Figure 2: Diagnostic page layout (the patterns in each area may look slightly different on your page)c00584715.gif 1 - Printed by the right cartridge 2 - Printed by the left cartridge NOTE: If you are printing in reserve mode (one cartridge is missing), the missing cartridge's area of the diagnostic page will be blank. Step 5: Check ink levels NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured ink cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, the ink level indicator is inaccurate or unavailable. Look in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (for "empty") and "F" (for "full") at each end show the ink levels in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color. Printer (HP5650) has full ink cartridges.window sez almost empty

That is normal, the printer "sees" the cartridges by their serial number, so when you pop in a refilled cartridge, the printer thinks you have put in old cartridges and continue to show low ink level. When you pop in a new one, with a new serial code, the ink level will reset, showing that the cartridges are full again.
You can try this:
1. Open printer lid so cartridges move to center of carriage.
2. Lift clamp and remove black or color cartridge from the holder.
3. Place cartridge on table with copper contact strip facing you.
4. Carefully place a strip of clear plastic tape over the four contacts on the upper left corner of the cartridge.
5. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position.
6. Open lid and remove cartridge again. Remove tape from left side and place tape over four contacts at upper right corner of cartridge.
7. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position again.
8. Open lid again, remove cartridge, remove tape.
9. Reinstall cartridge and close lid.
Printer will now recalibrate. Once the process is complete the ink level meter should be reading full again.
Doesn't always work, but you can try.

Where do I find the ink volume indicator on the hp 6940 deskjet printer?

  • Step 1 Check the back of your computer to make sure that the printer is appropriately connected to the computer and is plugged in. If the printer is not plugged into the computer, find the printer jack on the back of the computer and plug it in before you move on to the next step.
  • Step 2 Click on the "Start" menu button which is located on bottom left hand corner of your screen. Click on the "Settings" bar and notice that a list of functions pop up to the left of the settings button. Click on the control panel icon.
  • Step 3 Look for the printer/fax icon in the control panel window. Double click on the printer icon.
  • Step 4 Find the icon for your printer in the opened window and right click on the icon. Now click on the "Preferences" option.
  • Step 5 Look for the menu box pop up with tabs near the top of the box. Click on the "Services" tab.
  • Step 6 Click on "Service this device." You will find the button on the Services menu that you just activated.
  • Step 7 Click on the estimated ink level tab and a graphic will appear indicating how much ink is left in the cartridge.

HP 6940 Deskjet Low Ink

It is not uncommon for a refilled HP ink cartridge to register as empty. If it was otherwise filled properly, it should yield the correct number of pages, but you may not be able to get the warning light to go out.

You can try tapping the cartridge on a hard surface. This only works sometimes. Be careful not to splash any ink.

I hope this helps.

Install cartridge missing on Deskjet 6940

Please remove the cartridges from the printer. Take a dry lint free paper towel and gently wipe the contacts on the back of the cartridge (not the bottom from where ink is present). Wipe the contacts inside the printer (on cartridge carrier). Please snap the cartridges back into the cartridge carrier and please try to print a printer self test.

Printer Toolbox Not Recognizing New Black Ink

The Deskjet 6940 will only show ink level for original HP cartrdgies. Refilled or reman cartridges will show as empty or unknown in the toolbox. This is not an issue with the driver, the cartrdige itself has information that it has been previously used and this is not resettable. You can continue to print with a cartrdige that has unknown ink levels, you will just not get low ink warnings.

Printer Toolbox Not Recognizing New Black Ink Cartridge

Pop out the cartridge and look inside the printer where the black cartridge goes. There may be punctures in the ribbon cable from the metal wire that rests against the catridge. I have lost 2 6940's to this problem.
