Scanner in general do not recognize text; once a document is scanned, an OCR (Optical Recognition Software) must be used to recognize characters.

Some OCR software are bundled with scanners, and you aquire them from different download sites; I can help you if you are interested.

pls. vote for better service. Thanks

I have a HP Precisionscan Pro 3.14. I want to scan something as an editable file but aren't given that as an option. Is there an update so I can do that?

If you scan any document, it would not be in editable formate. You would need to convert the scan document in to text by OCR software like Nuance, Adobe Writer etc.. and then you might be able to edit the document.

I want to scan word documents to then edit them in word. All I end up with is the text with a box around it and I cant edit the text.

There is no scanning of a word document - you are scanning an image. If that image is a page with words printed on it or a picture , it doesn't mater to the scanner, to it all are pictures. So in the end you have a picture of the scanned image - in your case a picture of the page. Since you can't edit a picture with word you must convert that picture into an word document. For that you use an OCR program http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_character_recognition This printer has an OCR program in it, but you must activate and guide it yourself, it won't do the job automatically. To learn how to use it launch the installed HP Solution Center from your pc, it's a part of the driver that should have been installed with it.

I have a Dell V105 scanner printer. I am able to scan a document as a picture, but no text edit is possible. I do also have ABBYY fine reader 6.0 Sprint. What am I doing wrong? I do have the Dell...

Once you have scanned a text document you need to use an OCR (optical character recognition) program to convert the scanned image to text. This text document is then copied and pasted into a Word document to edit, amend and correct spelling mistakes created by the OCR program.
There are freeware OCR programs on the Internet as well as commercial programs.
Check out these freeware OCR programs from these WEB sites.

I have a hp 1310 AIO Printer how do you scan documents to computer using such programmes as ms word

MS Word cannot open scanned documents to edit. You need to run a scanned document through an OCR program (optical character recognition program) which converts the scanned document into a text document. Then you open Ms Word and import or open this text document to edit or change the text.

How to scan and edit text document

You must use an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program

Run the "ScanSoft OmniPage" software that came with your printer.
Load the document into the scanner and "acquire" the document through OmniPage.
The pictures will not show up and the text may not be 100% accurate.
Run the resulting document into your wordprocessor (MS Word? or Works?), and run spellcheck.

Scan a document to my desktop

Choose OCR (Optical Character Recognition) if you mean to edit what you are copying, otherwise it would be like a photograph of what you are scanning and you will not be able to modify it as text. The original document should be very clear and the text dark, if not, then OCR will 'guess' what it thinks it saw and you had better be careful to review the entire document for errors. A good way to proofread a document for spelling is to look at it word by word from its ending toward its beginning. If you don't do it this way, then we tend to read it in context and read it so it makes sense even though there are misspellings. It wouldn't hurt to read it then from the top to the bottom to be sure it makes sense.

Cannot edit scanned document

Hi,

its like this, the OCR or the SOftware installed in your computer is limited. If you're trying to scan a document which has a picture or with text that uses different fonts like monotype, or those that are not usually being use for normal documents, usually it wouldnt detect and it become distorted. Anyways, here are the steps that i want you to follow.

1. Open solution center. (click start, go to all programs, go to HP, then click on SOLUTION CENTER). or you can see SOlution Center on your Desktop.
2. Click on Scan Documents, then the Scan documents setting will open. Change the settings to these.
* SCAN TO: Microsoft Word.
3. Then, hit scan.
4. After scanning, the folder My Scans will open automatically, just go ahead and open the scanned document.
5. From there, you can start editing the text.

..remember, the scan a document is limited, it will not read all types of fonts. if the document is using a "times new roman" or "arial" the scanned document appears to be almost the same with the original. But, if the scanned document contains pictures or stylish fonts, that would make the document distorted.

Please let me know if you still have clarifications.

Thank you.
