Turn the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest aperture (largest f/number) and lock it. Control the aperture from the camera, just as with other lenses.

Thanks for the response but I've tried that set it to f22 and locked it but it still does the same. Could it be a setting on the camera as i've tried it on a friends D50

What happens if you turn the mode dial to the M(anual) position?

  • kakima Nov 15, 2010

Okay, I can only think of two other things. First, try cleaning the contacts, both on the back of the lens and in the mount on the camera body using a clean cloth dampened with distilled water or rubbing alcohol. Second, if you have access to another lens with an aperture ring, try that on the D70 to see whether that works.

D3100 DOESN'T RECONIZE NEW AF-S 50MM 1.8G LENS

There are a series of small brass "buttons" on the outside bottom of the lens where contact is established. If a new lens, there may be some dirt or grease on them preventing contack. Wipe lens and camera buttons carefully with a lent free cloth and retry. Then it is time to go back to the seller.

I have a Nikon D40x and purchased the AF nikkor 50 mm f/1.8D lens a couple years ago, but find that it can only be focused manually. Is there any way to "turn on" the autofocus? I have not had...

Sorry, but the D40x lacks an autofocus motor, depending on the lens to have one. Nikon calls such lenses AF-S. This particular lens does not have such a motor, relying on the camera to have one. The only 50mm lens currently available with an autofocus motor is this one:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2180/AF-S-NIKKOR-50mm-f%252F1.4G.html

Earlier this week the Nikon web site listed a new 50mm F1.8 lens with an autofocus motor, but then it was removed. Hopefully they will officially announce this lens soon.

I am trying to mount the AF f/1.8D 50mm lense on my Nikon D90- I do not here the click sound - when I turn on the camera, in the view finder I see F-- flashing all the time in any mode. Can you help me...

This particular lens is known to be a tight fit, especially when new. Most likely you just need to turn the lens a hair more and a little bit harder than you normally would in order to have it "click" home.

I have a D90 Nikon, I mounted my Nikkor 50mm 1.8d

Make sure you set the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest setting (largest f/number) and lock it. Without doing so, the lens will not communicate properly with the camera and thus you will not get the autofocusing.

'' Fee'' problem...

Turn the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest aperture (largest f/number) and lock it in place. If you need to, you can control the aperture by turning the subcommand dial (the one in front, under the shutter release button, unless you've swapped the dials).

This lens is less then a year old and when I snap

Check the aperature setting and make sure it's set to the red mark. It could also be that the contacts on the lens or the camera need to be cleaned. Alcohol is the best since it won't leave a residue, but a clean pencil eraser will also work.

I can get my 50mm lens to work with my d70 nikon.

If the lens has an aperture ring, make sure it is set on the largest f number. Make sure the lens is mounted fully on camera. Oherwise an AF 50mmm f1.8 lens should work on a D70 with no problem

FEE message in display when using 50mm lense

The FEE message indicates that the lens is not set to smallest aperture (highest number). The camera body expects this so it will have full control of the aperture. It sounds like you may be accidentally bumping or turning the aperture ring on the lens while using it or changing lenses. There is a little slide lock to lock it at f/22 to prevent this. Turn the aperture ring to 22 and move the slider so the white dot is next to the orange mark on the lens barrel.
