Question about Garden

Hi, my ST 30 Kubota was running fine, went to start it and it over revved, blowing black smoke, but stopped when the key was turned off. I suspect a stuck rack but don`t know how to get at it. Help! Robbo

Hi, if it blew black smoke overreved and then was stopped suddenly, most likely then you have broken one or more "Rings" i would expect.
To do anything with these units, one simply must obtain a shop or service manual, one cannot service nor repair without the reference contained in the manual, not to mention the parts numbers, needed to obtain spare parts too.
Also inside these manuals, ate all the relevant troubleshooting steps that you need to take to isolate and then repair your problem.
The first thing to check, is the throttle make sure it is working OK, it may simply have been stuck, and simply need, lube, & a few good opening and closing of the throttle a number of times, then try starting up again, a little high revving and black smoke, can be Ok if just in the initial startup.... but if it is throttle jammed wide open, well then no.. however sometimes a motor will cough up black smoke for a bit, as it starts, it sort of "Clears it's throat" so to speak.. this may/should settle down once it all warms up... but generally as related, it means that the Oil is able to get by the rings, and up into the combustion chamber, and hence the black smoke, usually indicating worn, or broken rings.. which need to be checked.

My Kubota BX2200 will not run it will run fine if you hold the key to start but when you let it go to on it stops running

Sounds like the fuel shutoff solenoid. cost around $!50 for the part.
Whats happening is when you turn it over the solenoid is holding the pin and when you let go of the key the solenoid is releasing the pin and shutting off the fuel.

Hope this helps

As it went for a period of time I suspect that the fuel system has a problem. I take it that it is a diesel being a kubota. When diesel sits unused for a period of time gunk grows in the fuel tank. I suspect that this gunk has now blocked the fuel filter or that there is air in the system that has to be bled out. I would also check that the stop solenoid on the fuel pump is working to allow it to start.

Black smoke would indicate it is burning oil, Has the machine been working on an incline.? check valve clearences. My guess is that oil is somehow getting into the cylinder.

Looks like you've got a good idea on what makes diesels smoke, so I'm sure you know that black smoke is almost always from too much fuel for the air that's going in. So it can be too much fuel or too little air. If your filters are good, the next things to check are the fuel pressure and the injectors.

I know diesels, but I don't have any specific experience with lawn mowers (kubota?). Since it stalls eventually, it sounds like it's not a single cylinder (although not for sure) so I'd check injector pump first.

Kubota kh 91 excavator, blowing lots black smoke

If the Air filters are NOT restricted in any way and it's not skipping ( indivual cylinder problem ), check the small return line coming from the injectors going to tank for blockage. This will be a small line probably held on with a worm gear clamp. Good luck

Engine runs wild with white smoke

If its a 4JX engine then its injectors and seals at fault dont run it any more cos it may blow up - like rods through the side !
The diesel is going straight into the engine without being injected and as the fuel lift pump is mechanical it wont stop on the key .
Should be under isuzu warranty though they are doin that repair on 1998 Troopers over here for free .
