While Kumar is correct, please note that by restoring your pc using the restore disk, you will lose all of your information as you will have a 'new' hard drive, just as it came from the manufacturer. If you can, try to back up whatever you need to save. If possible, try to perform a repair as opposed to a reinstall until you can save what you need.

Hi Toshiba ships a restore DVD with the original factory configuration on it. Booting with this DVD will trigger a Ghost-like restore process that will revert everything to the factory settings. But before doing a reinstallation check for the drivers availability in toshiba support website just to make shore incase if the drivers are missing from the cd/dvd we can still download it.Good luck.
please revert for any queiries @ sanju_kumarbs@yahoo.co.in

If you are determined to risk registry cleaning, you might try Wise Registry Cleaner, Glary's registry cleaner, or the registry cleaner in CCleaner or the commercial Advanced System Mechanic. You may use Revo Uninstaller to completely remove the programs you installed immediately before trouble emerged or resort to accessing the registry backup you created before cleaning. Many of the cleaners allow creation of such backups from within the software..

Sooner or later, registry cleaning seems to result in a "gotcha." You will be glad you had system restore points when that day happens. I try to leave registry junk alone, use portable apps to avoid installs affecting the registry, and make a restore point prior to every software installation.

How do you determine what is safe to clean? Well, Wise Registry Cleaner rather gives you a screen which suggests what is purportedly completely safe to remove by the screen colors indicating safe ones. If you have any doubts, don't remove the registry entry.

Not that the advice will keep you completely safe! Backup your critical data files to an external hard drive before engaging in too much registry tampering. As you chase performance, cleaning suites sound like a good option, right up to the point you crash, then you are chasing recovery options.

Use of Sandboxes and Virtual Drives avoid some garbage collection but that far more than you have requested to know about.

Adding ram sped up XP machines more than registry tweaks ever did.

How to Install an Operating System on an External USB Hard Drive:

You may have an external hard drive you want to use for more than just document backup.
In this situation, you can install an operating system onto your external hard drive. By doing so, you will be able to run your external hard drive as a fully functional operating system.
If your primary hard drive ever crashes, you will have a backup option unavailable to those who simply use their external hard drives as file and document backup.

1) Plug your external Hard Drive into your Computer using the USB cable. Insert the installation disk for your Operating System into the CD/DVD Drive. Turn on or restart your Computer.

2) Boot from the installation disk. You may have to press a key once prompted to boot from the installation disk.

3) Accept the license terms and conditions. Read through these carefully if you wish to understand your legal rights as a user. If you disagree with these terms and conditions, you may want to purchase a different Operating System.

4) Choose your destination drive. Your external Hard Drive will likely be the E: or F: drive. By default, the C: will represent your main Hard Drive and the D: will usually represent your CD/DVD Drive.

5) Begin the installation. Your external Hard Drive will install the Operating System. You will now be able to run that Operating System off of your external hard drive.

Hope this helps.

My acer eRecovery is missing

When a person buys a computer, and turns it on for the first time, you are repeatedly asked if you wish to make a Backup.

This is your Restoration (Recovery) disk

Did you make one?

No?

Then either contact Acer for the disk, or buy a fresh, new genuine copy of Windows, and install it.

When asked choose Repair. Non-Destructive Installation.

[Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer]

Or see if a nearby computer repair shop can repair the basic Windows files.

Regards,
joecoolvette

[NO, I do not agree that the Recovery files are on the harddrive, and not a separate disk.
The reason however, that this method was brought into play, was because of users.

1) Lost the recovery disk.
2) Afraid to use the recovery disk, so they just take it down to a computer shop anyway.

Hmmm, I'm a pre-built computer manufacturer......................

Say the disk costs around 50 cents USD.
If I take that times 100,000 computers, I save $50,000 dollars.

Users don't use them anyway, I can save $50,000 dollars.........hey, whats the problem?
I'll just put it on the harddrive, and tell them to make a Backup disk.

NOW people aren't even making a Backup disk! Sheesh!

Im guessing XP and if you have the CD do whats called a repair install. Choose the upgrade option then install it, this will not harm any of your programs at all you will just have to do all the windows updates when its finished. Cheers and please vote

My computer is only left on for about 5 or 10 minutes and it freezes up to the point where I have to reboot it and it usually takes 4-5 times of rebooting for it to come up to "start windows normally"...

CorruptedSystem Files

Your computer freezes due to corruptedsystem files. System files corruption is one of the most responsible causes forcrashing the entire computer. Deleting or moving the system files may crashyour computer.

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows Installation CD ROM.
2. Click Start ' Run.
3. Type SFC/ ScanNow and press ENTER.
4. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Corrupted Registry

System registry corruption leads to runtime errors and your computer crashes.Windows Registry is very complex and not easy to repair manually. Hence, athird-party Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software is recommended.

1. Download a Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software such as Reginout.
2. Click Registry Cleaner tab.
3. Click Start Scan.
4. The registry scan will start. Wait till it is finished.
5. As per the results, click Fix Now button to start repairing you registry.

Often good registry cleaners include built-in Backup & Restore centre thatlets you recover from an unforeseen situation by simply restoring the state ofyour registry.

Faulty RAM

Your computer freezes due to problemswith the computer memory. A faulty RAM may result in Blue Screen of Death(BSOD).

In such a case, remove the existing RAM and clean it using a soft cloth. Then, connect it again. The problem may not persist..

Repair the registry entries created by a failed setup and delete the files thatstill remain on your hard disk. Delete the contents of C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Disk Space Allocated by Unnecessary Files

Your computer freezes if the operating system has no adequate free disk spaceto perform its operations. Temporary files, temporary internet files, logfiles, browser cache and other files may occupy a large amount of your diskspace and thus generating runtime errors that crashes your system.

Using Disk Cleaner, delete the junk files from your hard disk. The steps are asbelow:

My 504 got a virus and HD crashed. Should I just get a new HD installed? Who is best to do this? I am not so happy with local computer "experts" so far. Lots of $$ and no good fixes. Ripped off

Its not usual for a virus to cause the heads to crash. Its worth trying the drive in another PC especially if you need to get at the data. If you instal a new HD you will need all the original software disks to be able to set up the machine. That is unless you have a usable backup from something like acronis. If you think there is a virus on the HD then it may also be on your restore points and any backup you have ..these will need cleaning..restore points by deleting them, any backup will require you to use something like malwarebytes, spybot etc...
This machine is quite old now you may want to think about replacing it....rather than fit an new hdd.

Windows xp home edition reinstall

If you use his disk, that will be better, because if it is original HP disk, it should install all original drivers at all, however this may delete all files on the computer depending on the type of installation you do.

Installing an older version of XP home does not make a big difference , as windows will update the system using automatic updates. What must be done, is ensuring that all proper drivers are installed.

Check device manager, in control panel/system, and see if all devices are installed with proper drivers.
