The heater has been off since May. We do not smell gas and it does not light up.

Wouldn't know what the ignitor looks like or how to install a new one. Can you direct
    me where to look ?

  • Linda Cook Nov 12, 2010

The heater is working. Watching closely to make sure it turns off and on
correctly. We held down the up and down arrow buttons after pushing the
on button. It always went thru a 15 second start up before showing the 11 code.
This time it continued into light up mode and blew out heat. Has been on
for about an hour and heating the room. Will continue to watch it..........

Have you tried a new ignitor? and checked if the ignitor is located in the correct spot to ignite the LP Gas?

How long has the heater remained dormant?

Does it light up or do you smell gas?

The following link was listed on the search engine's website but didn't open for me at my end. Maybe try it later:

    http://www.rinnai.us/customer-support/ma...

There may be some technical manuals on the site that show the ignitor, I thought, and also troubleshooting for the heating unit.

I also found a .pdf for the RHFE-1004FA unit:

I read in the manual that code 11 is 'ignition failure' and to contact service in case it happens again, however a code 11 can be caused by air in the gas line that needs to be purged, or an electrode that isn't 'clicking' to ignite the fuel.

p.32 of the rhfe263fa.pdf manual has the troubleshooting for your unit. Since the unit hasn't been in operation since May, you might want to purge air from the fuel lines, since you didn't smell any gas. That can cause the ignition failure problem code 11.

    OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE
WARNING: If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may result causing
property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
    A. This appliance does not have a pilot. It is equipped
with an ignition device which automatically lights the
burner. Do not try to light the burner by hand.
    B. BEFORE OPERATING, smell all around the appliance
area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor
because some gas is heavier than air and will settle on
    the floor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
    • Do not try to light any appliance.
    • Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any
    phone in your building.
    • Immediately call your gas supplier from a
neighbor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's
    instructions.
    • STOP! Read the safety information above on this
    label.
    1. Set the thermostat to lowest setting.
    2. Turn off all electric power to the appliance via the
ON/OFF button on the control panel. Locate manual
gas valve to be found on back side of heater.
    3. Turn Manual valve clockwise to the full OFF
    position.
    4. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell
for gas, including near the floor. If you then smell gas,
    1. Turn off electric power to the appliance using the
ON/OFF button located on the control panel.
    2. Locate manual valve to be found upstream on gas line
    from the unit.
    3. Turn manual valve clockwise to the full OFF position.
NOTE: The fan will continue to operate until the appliance is
cool. Do not turn the appliance off by unplugging it from the
    wall.
Keep burner and control compartment clean. Refer to the
installation and operating instructions accompanying heater.
STOP! Follow “B” in the safety information above on
this label. If you don't smell gas, go to next step.
    5. Turn Manual gas valve to the full ON position.
    6. Turn on all electric power to the appliance via ON/OFF
    button.
    7. Set the thermostat to desired setting.
    8. Burner is lit when indicator lamp “ON” turns red.
    9. “ON” indicator flashes when burner fails to ignite.
    10. If the appliance will not operate, follow the instruction
“TO turn off gas to appliance” and call your service
technician or gas supplier. See manual for additional
    information.
    • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire
    department.
    C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control
knob. Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or
turn by hand, don't try to repair it. Call a qualified
service technician. Force or attempted repair may
result in a fire or explosion.
    D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been under
water. Immediately call a qualified service technician
to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the
control system and any gas control which has been
    under water.

I think that's all I found that seemed relevant to your no heat problem with the RHFE-1004FA Heater.

The ignitor is actually referred to as an 'electrode.'

This isn't something where we can help you with. You need to contact a heating and cooling company who then can contact a supplier. Or try Ebay, sometimes you can get parts you need from there.

A/C Blows warm when idle

I can't say much without having the actual code.
When the ac stops blowing cold at idle, the most common reason is not enough air flowing thru the radiator, or the radiator fan is not running and the only air flow is when the vehicle is moving.

Error Code 11

Ignition Failure. Make sure you have fuel. Look into the window when you try to start to see if you can see the sparking of the iginter. Make sure the flue pipe is clear on both the exhaust and air side. Short of that you will need to get hold of a Rinnai tech.

RHFE-1004FA 38,400 BTU Energy Saver Ductless Heater - LP Gas: water heater gives a code 12...

Error code 12 on a Rinnai means the unit lit, sensed a flame but then failed to sense it some time later whilst in operation. Most commen faults causing this are gas regulator based on LPG systems. The regualtor fails to let enough gas through to continue powering the burner. I did have another where the guy had put a natural gas model on LPG supplies, you didn't say if this fault was on a newly installed sysyem or not!
One other cause (not so well known) is if you when you get a 12 immeadiatly you turn the tap on. This is caused by a short circuit on the low voltage side of the heater. I'm guessing you have controllers to display the error code. I've had a few where a bit of DIY work has put a nail though a wire supplying the controller and caused a short. The wiring is only 12 volt so it doesnt blow any fuses. If you do have controllers, get a qualified person to remove the front of the heater and disconnect the controller lead from the circuit board, see if this stops the fault. If it does, try and find the short in the wire (even had rats cause this in one location)
If this doesnt work get the technician to check the overheat loom around the heat exchanger, this is another favorite place for the wiriing to short.

Happy hunting.

My Home Ac Unit Is Not Blowing Any Air

This sounds like the fan not turning during cool. You will have to check the fan relay for power during the cool cycle. The fan relay is run by the low voltage side, but still there is hi voltage present. When in heat the power goes thru the relay on one set of points then in cool goes thru the opposite side. You should have a digram present, and then on the main circuit board there is a code light. Check the light for blinking or (flash) read the bottom of the board for the code ( very small print)

Error code 12

Three main causes.

Short circuit on the low voltage side of the wiring (12V) This will show as an immeadiate error code 12 befoe the thing even tries to light.

Faulty earth on the low voltage side shows same as above.

A faulty gas regulator or partial blockage of gas supply that allows the unit to fire, but will not maintain sufficient gas supply to keep it alight. This will happen after it has lit, maybe erratically with the occasional error code 11 if you try and re-light immeadiately.

Carrier Gas Furnace runs fine randomly stops blowing LEDs flash

That blinking light may be the diagnostic light. Count the blinks next time it fails. Carrier units will have two different blinks depicting the error code such as one blink followed by a pause than 3 blinks giving you an error code of 13. Then look at the wiring diagram, it will have an error code chart telling you where to start with your diagnosis. You already know that if you remove the cover it erases the error code, so look thru the small window first.

Furnace wont run

First of all when you flip the switch, it goes thru a startup sequence. THEN it turns on the Igniter (notice the red glow). Then the gas turns on.

Now at this point check the idiot light and it should be giving you a code of 34. That 34 (3 shorts 4 longs) says that there was a problem igniting the furnace. After it cycles thru at least 4 times and fails to ignite all the blowers, then is when you get a code 14 (1 short 3 longs)

NOTICE what's happening with ALL the burner Tubes each time it attempts to ignite. If only one or two are running....then this is your problem.
To fix all you do is take out the burner Tubes, look for debris, blow them out (blow from the front where all the jets are), and replace them in sequence from left to right (the tabs overlap).

I have a Rinnai Energysaver 556F

The heater will have some error codes stored in it. To retrieve them get an assistant to write down the codes as you see them. They come quickly. OK to get the codes, push down on the Economy button and the up arrow and down arrow at the same time. Hold for three seconds. It will take three fingers to do this. Once you get the error codes, look in your owners manual to diagnose.
