i have that drive connected to my windows 7 machine. You are asking me to reboot it thru a bootable CD? why?. I can bring up the machine fine with normal boot. The drive is not my primary its a external drive.

Its an external USB Segate 8gb st1.2 drive. That's the problem its not a main hard drive of my computer and i cannot access it connecting it to the windows. Occationally it shows as mapped to F: Removable Disk. But when i click it it shows nothing and gives the message as "Please insert the Disk".

That "Clunk Clunk" sound" you hear is the death rattle of a drive, sorry, I have experienced this many many times.
Generally they cannot be easily fixed. One can try to get an exactly the same drive and remove the Motherboard off a Brand New drive, and replace the MB, on the "Faulty" drive, if the board is your problem, You must be prepared to "Blow up" that new board too. If sucessful, then usually it will, "just work" as it was before. If it is the drives "internals" There isn't much more one can do.
If one cannot "Mount" or "See" the drive, then there is no way to retrieve data, if it can be mounted, then there are a number of programs on the 'net, freeware, to do this for you, simply Google, HDD data recovery, and take your pick.
If however the data is imperitive, there are places, that for a price, will recover the data 100% guaranteed.
But with these tiny HDD they are very easily damaged because the tolerances are so small, and when they are again because of the size they are difficult to work with.

Your harddrive has bad sectors you need to fix it first. Connect your harddrive to computer where windows was loaded. then if you are able to access harddrive in windows then take bakup first. After take bakup you can format it then it will work again. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

  • Yes for that you need to connect it to computer where windows loaded.

If you unalbe to access that on another computer.

then you need to boot computer with bootable disk then run disk manager tools of seagate then fix the bad sectors then you can use it again.

  • Is it SATA drive or external usb drive?

Seagate backup plus is beeping and will not pull up on computer??

Troubleshooter: Seagate Manager does not see my Seagate FreeAgent drive Troubleshooting in case the Seagate Manager cannot detect the FreeAgent drive.
Sometimes, Seagate Manager (the software bundled with newer FreeAgent drives) does not see the drive.
This article focuses on drives that can be seen in Windows, but are not seen in the software.
If you are using Windows 8, please note that Seagate Manager is not supported in Windows 8, so you will need to use a different backup solution.

If the drive is not detected in Windows 7/Vista/XP, then use the external drive troubleshooters to try to resolve the non-detection issue.
After connecting the FreeAgent drive, please give it up to 1 minute to display in the middle of the main screen in Seagate Manager.
208575-1.jpg
If the drive does not display, open My Computer (Computer for Vista) and confirm the drive is listed there. The drive should be listed as "FreeAgent Drive". If you have formatted or renamed the drive, then it will show up with the name you provided.
If the drive does not display in My Computer (Computer for Vista), use the External Drive Troubleshooter to help resolve that issue before continuing.
If the drive is detected in Windows, check if the Seagate service is running.
  1. Right-click on the My Computer (Computer for Vista) icon.
  2. Choose Manage.
  3. In the Computer Management window, click Services and Applications.
  4. Open the Services area.

    208575-2.jpg
  5. Scroll down the Seagate Service (they are listed alphabetically).
  6. The Seagate service should display Started in the Status column.
If it does not, right-click on the service and choose START.
  7. If the service reports as Disabled, enable it to start automatically.
To do this, right-click on the service. A Status Type drop-down menu will appear. Click on the General tab. Select Automatic and click OK.
    208575-3.jpg
  8. Reboot the computer.
  9. If the service fails to start after you reboot with these settings, then check the logs of your Antivirus or Antispyware software to confirm they are not restricting the startup of this service, as some aggressive protection programs can prevent services from starting until you approve them. So, you may need to approve this program specifically in the Antivirus/Antispyware software. Please contact your anti-virus software support for help.
  10. If the service will not start or is working already, uninstall the software (for steps on uninstalling the software, see this article).
  11. Once the software is uninstalled, reboot the computer.
  12. Then reinstall the software by opening the InstallSeagateManager.EXE file on the FreeAgent drive. If you have removed the software from the drive, it can be downloaded from the download center.
  13. If the drive is still not seen by the computer, connect the drive to other USB ports on the computer.
Some eSATA cards block the drive's identity and prevent it from working. Updates have been made to Seagate Manager and to some vendors' eSATA drivers to help this issue. See our eSATA tips article for details.
  14. If the drive still does not display after these steps, please contact Technical Support.

How to detect two IDE drives with same brand

You need to set one of the drives to be 'master' and the other to be 'slave'.
This is done by positioning jumpers on the back of the harddrives.
Pretty sure that on the drives is explained somewhere how to position the jumper, for several options.

Good luck,
Please post some feedback.
