Finalizing a DVD-R blank disc

When I press Disc Setting in the System Menu, only "Disc Name" and "Disc Information" are highlighted. After I name the disc, I try to move to the "Disc Finalize" setting, but the device skips over that and goes to "Disc Information." So how do I get to "Disc Finalize"?

A disc will not finalize if there is not enough space left on the disc. Discs that are too full cannot be finalized.
Also, make sure the disc you are using is a speed compatible for use with your DVD recorder. For example some DVD recorders may be compatible with discs that are rated 8x or slower only. Consult the instruction manual of the DVD recorder for further information. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

If you supply me with the brand and model number of this DVD burner I can be more help to you.

Different types of burners have little differences in them on how you get to the proper menu.

This may seem like a dumb question but I want to make sure and not just assume anything.

Did you already record some video to this disc?

You must have recorded something first and then finalize after that when you no longer want to put anything else on the disc. Once the disc is finalized you can not record anything else to it.

If you have not recordered anything yet it will not let you finalize it.

What brand of DVD-R are you using and does your owners manual suggest using that type?

Some DVD burners are very picky about what type of disc is used. I have had good luck with Sony and Memorex and the very best brand of DVD is Taiyo Yuden.

Once you can answer these questions for me I may be able to solve your problem.

I will get back to you as soon as possible

The Disc Finalize option is probably greyed out if the DVD player considers the disc as already finalized. Just to be sure, press the stop button twice with the disc inserted into the player, and see if the option becomes available after re-opening the DVD system menu.

I almost forgot - if you erase some of the material off the end of the disc - this may allow room for finalization. Also, if all else fails, you can finalize the disc using Windows' native CD burning/rewriting technology if you have a pc with a cd-rom.

How to enter disc menu for finalizing dvd-r on philips dvdr3330H

The Disc Settings menu is accessed from the Disc Index Picture screen (so it's not as easily accessed as on other brands of DVD recorders). When you first put a recorded disc in the device, you'll see this index screen. At this point you need to press the UP arrow on the remote repeatedly until the disc content menu appears. This is a screen with the disc name, amount of recording time used and the date of the first recording. Then press the Right arrow button to get to the Disc Settings menu. Use the Down Arrow to reach the line that reads Finalise Disc. Then press OK and then press OK a second time to confirm the action.

The documentation for the DVDR3330H is available from Philips here: http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=en&scy=hu&ctn=DVDR3330H/02 . See page 52 for the screen captures. The Finalise steps are on page 53.

I hope this helps.

Hello Joe,

Most of these DVD recorders are really meant to be recorded and played basically on the same machine... Now if the DVD player (that you wish to play, is an older model that is the problem)
But, as far finalizing place the DVD unto tray... close it...now that menu (using the remote) press it..you should have a menu and top menu (top is settings) the menu is play dvd jump to next scene..in settings an Disc that is not finalized should be able to name it and customize it...note if you have use an DVD+/- R you must format prior to use (finalizing is on this same)

Finalizing

Use a name-brand DVD, such as HP, Verbatim, etc. and make sure it is a DVD+R or DVD-RW/-R disk only.
It is most likely that the DVD you are using is not compatible.
The disk is still usable, but you can only read it on that player.

How to finalise dvd recording

Press the menu button on your remote - go to finalize disc - follow instructions. Note that VR discs can be played with many if not most DVD-players without finalizing. In fact I have had problems finalizing and unfinalizing discs back and forth. If the disc manager displays only unfinalize disc, the disc is already finalized.

Samsung R155 Recording from VHS Issues

The reason why you are having this problem is because you haven't finalized the disc. In able for you to play that Burned DVD that you have you need to Finalized the disc. Finalizing a recordable optical disc means writing the disc's lead-in (the Table of Contents or TOC) and lead-out information (blank data that fills up the unused space at the end of the disc) so that a DVD player will know where the various tracks begin and end. Without the TOC, a conventional DVD player will not be able to read the contents of the disc. Once the disc is finalized, no more information can be written to it. Finalizing takes about two or three minutes. To finalize a DVD-RW/DVD-R: 1. Press the Menu button with the disc stopped. 2. Select Disc Manager and press Enter or the right arrow. 3. Select Disc Finalize and press Enter or the right arrow. You will be asked twice if you are sure that you want to finalize the disc. Select Yes and press Enter. Once the disc is finalized, you cannot delete entries from the record list. After being finalized, the DVD-R/DVD-RW (video mode) operates in the same manner as a DVD-Video. Recorded discs must be finalized in order to play back in non-Samsung DVD players. A DVD-RW disc that has been recorded by DAO (disk-at-once mode) in a PC cannot be unfinalized. A DVD-RW disc that has been recorded in Video Mode on a non-Samsung recorder cannot be unfinalized by a Samsung recorder. A DVD-R disc cannot be unfinalized. Note: Finalization does not apply to DVD-RAM. If you cannot finalize a DVD-R or DVD-RW disc, make sure that Disc Protection is turned off. If you are still having difficulty, you may try calling technical support of SAMSUNG. Note: Do not turn the recorder off while it is finalizing the disc. Data on the disc will be damaged if the finalization process is interrupted.
