Hi,

Reformt the player:
There are two ways to format an Mp3 player - one on the computer itself, and one in Windows Media Player. Both methods will end up erasing all the songs on the player, but the player will be "good as new" after that. Sometimes reformatting in this manner will override the player's native formatting and cause problems - this can be reversed in most cases by updating the player's firmware. Firmware upgrades are available from most manufacturers' websites.

WARNING: The following procedures will erase all songs on the player.

Check if the file system is NTFS. If yes, format it to FAT or FAT32. - Connect player to computer, double-click my computer, right click on icon of mp3 player and select format. This only applies to Windows-based computers.
You can also format the player in Windows Media Player itself:
Connect your Mp3 player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "name of Mp3 player here 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.

Please don't forget to rate the soltuion.

Goodluck..

I seriously suggest u to upgrade the firmware for that product.

if that does not work u wil have to take to a service center and flash the memory and then upgrade the firmware again

i think only this can solve the problem.

reinstalling software wont help much.

because here boot.ini file is missing.

    here is how it goes.

the symptoms must be like this.

if u connect it to a computer u must be able to detect the hardwarre and u must be able to transfer songs also.
but the device wont start individually.

    why because...

while connected to computer the device synchronizes with the computer and does not boot.

and thus it does not need a boot file.

i shall tell you that this solution is going to be negative. and hence if u cant digest the bitter truth please dont read the solution. (i shall request u to ignore my last post)

The original CD has no USB driver program so it doesn't help at all.
There is a firmware upgrade program on RCA website for M4001. However,
when you have a 'boot error' on your unit, the USB connection is not recognized by Windows also and the firmware upgrade program does not work
either. So there is nothing you can do as a customer. The RCA customer
service tells you to send it back to them, with all the accessories and a copy of the receipt and promise to swap/fix for u.

Sometimes this kind of unit needs to reheat or resolder the IC,that cause of the error because the solder that holds the IC is crack already.,after reheating clean with contact cleaner or laquer thinner is good for electronics like this.

Hi,
Need some additional inputs from your end to give you a correct solution .
1. Did try transfering songs on to it from a MAC computer or I-tunes software.

2. The problem happened when you unplugged and replugged it in your system

3. Is this device working on any other system other than yours

4. Have you tried formatting it.

You can answer all there questions YES and NO and i would let you know what would be the best course of action

Regards
Proton

    Hi,

Connect the device , to another computer check if its working there. If yes , the problem is with the operating system in your computer. If the device doesnot work on the other system, the flash memory in the device has gone bad. Genrally all flash memory devices come with 3 yr warranty.

As I wrote, in my earlier post, if the unit is not working after the format too, kindly contact manufacturer to check if its in warranty and get the same replaced or repaired .There is nothing to open physically on the device and repair it at home.

    Thanks

Hello Stackb,

The solution for your problem, is as the hardware say, a reformat.
To do this you have to connectitthe MP3 to the computer. Then once it is detected, go to MY PC and right-click over your removable harddrive (mp3), and choose format.

Once you have formated it, you should click on this link to downloadyour MP3 firmware and then it should work again.
*note: your music and information will be lost

Good luck, and if you need anyother help let me know

    Stackbak,

I strongly recomend you beforeoverheating your MP3and cleaning it with contact cleaner, to reformat it the way i told you to in the previous post, and then reinstall the new firmware.

If you have anyother doubt, dont hesitate on telling me.

You need to format the device and install the firmware. If after installing the firmware you are still having the same problem. Then the device is defective.
    I hope you
will take the time to appropriately use Fixya's rating system since the
question and rating system go hand in hand.

    THANK YOU,
    NATE

After installing the firmware package in the PC, you'll get an install
screen for the new firmware with a format option for the OPAL. Select that option, If the "Start" button is grayed-out press the reset button at the
back of the OPAL for about 15 seconds, then hold down the "Play"
button and wait. Eventually the software will recognize the OPAL and
    will start to format it.

If you get a dialogue to restart the PC, press NO! You have to
read the instructions that come with the installation. Eventually It will format the drive and install the new firmware.

Boot error! please format unit

It might be cause by a corrupt firmware. You need to have a utility that restore the mp3 player to its original setting. i had exactly the same problem with my ipod shuffle 1st generation 2 years ago. Good thing Apple has that utility for me to download and until no it is still working. Try to visit and upgrade the firmware using this link for you mp3 player http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads.aspx?product=192
