Question about LaCie 500GB USB 2.0 7200 RPM 8MB 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I bought a Lacie 2TB hardrive and as soon as i plugged it in it caused problems for my 500GB model. It now will not copy large files, will not play films that are on it and keeps crashing, i have attempted to repair it using disk utilites but it say that there is nothing wrong!! The files do not appear to be corrupted! I have alot of work on the hardrive and planned to back it up on my new one, but now im just desperate for it to be saved! Help!!

I use an I Mac OSX 5.8. I just used the Disk utilites that came with my mac, which did work before when i had a similar problem. not sure about the voltage. But i am connecting them directly into my computer using USB. The one that has broken does have it own power supply i believe, well i do not have to keep it plugged in, unlike the 2TB version. I am not sure what is wrong but the 500GB hardrive keeps emitting a highpitched noise, not sure if it is the scratch disk? but it has never done it before and does not sound good

Which "disk utilities" did you use?
Ones that check the "file-system-integrity" (that every file on the disk is listed in the table-of-contents, and that no 2 files point to the same block on the disk)?
Ones that write data to every block on the disk, and read the data back, to confirm that the disk can _correctly_ store data ?

What computer? Desktop? Laptop?

How much voltage/amperage does each USB port supply to the connected USB device?

Are you connecting the devices to a USB hub, or directly to your computer?

Do the external disk-drives each have their own power-supply?

It's not a good sign if a hard disk is making loud clicking noise. It means that the hard drive is about to give up. The clicking sound you can hear is caused by the arm of the hard disk knocking against other components in the hard drive. I recommend to back up your data as soon as possible.

Good luck,

Here is what LaCie suggests about this issue:- first backup any data you have copied on Wireless Space. You can also backup your configuration: from "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, click "save" button next to "Configuration file", it will download a backup file.
- still in "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, tick the third box labeled "Restore device to factory state (data erased)", or any equivalent quote in selected language, and click apply
- the device will reboot, rebuild hard drive image, then reboot on default state. The issue is definitively fixed
- it is recommended to apply latest update downloaded from LaCie website
- you can restore previous configuration in "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, click restore and select previously downloaded backup file

Help is it possibol to upgrade lacie big disk extreme 500gb to 1tb or 2tb. thanks. FC

Maybe. If the current disk-drive has an IDE interface, then your 500GB disk-drive already is the largest IDE disk-drive ever produced. Or, if the current disk-drive has a SATA interface, then the sky (or the thickness of your wallet) is the limit.

I am having a problem copying large mkv files from a WD 2TB mybook to another WD 2TB mybook. they are both formatted to NTSC. I had no problem loading the first drive but the second one is giving me fits!

In order to fix this problem, be sure that the drive is formatted to NTSC. Mine was, however, when I started loading mp3 files to the drive first, it somehow got reformatted to FAT32. I don't know how, but it did. Copy your mkv files FIRST!

My Lacie 500GB drive shuts my laptop down when i connect it.

similar issue: my notebook hangs instead of restarting. i thought its the usb2.0 of my rather old(3yr) notebook. but i bought a cheap usb box for my old 120G hdd and it plug-n-play like a charm on the same old notebook/same usb port. quite frustrated with this Lacie 500G beast.

so i ended up backing up my notebook using the 1-click backup of Lacie but using my old 120G hdd instead of the new Lacie500G. but then, search as i would through the Lacie documentation, i see no mention of how to restore the data... still looking...
