maybe a coupling or dc filter has gone bad, unpolarised ceramic or any other type, usually disc type or surface mounted. they are connected in series on the audio line. one easy way to find out is test the capacitors whether they are shorted (the ones on the left channel). or u can shift filter capacitors left to right one by one to find out the culprit.

Crackling is not good. Sounds like it needs to be serviced if all of the connecting cables are in good working order. It can be repaired by Rita's Vintage Audio in WA state. They are expensive but good.
