Question about Dell Dimension 8300 PC Desktop

2 Answers

My Dell Dimension 8300 shuts off while booting up, sometimes once, sometimes 3 or more times. To recover, I have to unplug it, wait about a minute then turn it on with the power button. Once it's running, it's good for the rest of the day. Any ideas?

I have Avira AntiVir Personal software, I run the virus scan weekly (takes about 4') It has run twice since this problem began, but has not shown any problem. Is there a scanning program you could recommend for this problem which is better than Avira?

How far does it reach before it restarts itself? Upto Windows Splash Screen? or before that? What is the operating System installed on your system? i.e. windows xp or vista or etc..etc... In the first part, it seems a hardware issue, but when I read "Once it's running, it's good...." it seems application issue. I can't make sure right now. We need to diagnose and do some analyses.

The first thing you can try is "Safe Mode", boot into Safe Mode several times and verify whether the problem persists or not. If the problem persists, you need not to do anything, but if there's no problem booting into Safe Mode, then uninstall installed programs which you could reinstall later, clean the system's registry files, delete temp files (use this program to do those cleanings [Click Here to Download]). Uninstall and reinstall the Antivirus Program or any other security programs like anti-spyware [never install two or more antiviruses on a system]. Now try again and check whether this helps or not.

Also disable all the Start Up programs except Microsoft's programs, restart your computer and try again. To do this, press "Windows Key + R" [Windows key = the key on the keyboard with Microsoft Logo], type in "msconfig" [without quotation marks], press enter, click "StartUp" tab and then "Disable All", click "Ok" and again - restart your computer several times. If this doesn't help. Then the problem must be with the Windows or the Hardware(s).
Let me know the result so that we can proceed........ All the best.

Run a complete virus scan. The problem you describe is typical of computers infected with one of several viruses.

You might want to try McAfee or Norton Anti-virus. You can download a trial of either from their respective web site. Another option is to a copy of "TuneUp Utilities". I installed it on my PC, (also a Dell Dimension), and it does an excellent job at finding and fixing a variety of problems. It also does a good job at speeding up your computer by getting rid of unnecessary clutter.

If you plan to try TuneUp you can purchase it from Staples or Office Depot for under $20.00. On-line cost from the manufacturer is almost twice that.

Dell dimension 8300 power switch will not turn on

You could have a faulty switch mode power supply.
Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

I am trying to re-install windows xp on a DELL dimension 8300 but it does'nt boot it can go to the BIOS and everything but it say Boot.mgr is missing

You should use the bootable Windows XP CD to start the installation.
To do that, you must first enter the BIOS in the Boot Options select the DVD drive as first (so that it will boot from CD/DVD first, instead of the hard disk). Save and Exit, insert the bootable Windows XP CD in the drive and when prompted to do so, "press any key to boot from CD-Rom".
Hope the above helps.

How do I reformat a Dell dimension 8300, it will not do anything after inserting the operating system disk

You need to make the DVD drive the first bootable device.
F2 on boot up should take you into the bios, it should say on the first screen as you boot what key takes you into the bios/setup.
Change the boot settings to allow the dvd drive to boot first.
It should now say press any key to boot from cd/dvd when you put your installation disc in

How do I remove the power button on Dell Dimension 8300 desktop

open the side- and along the just inside the front exposed edge there are several tab that get push inward to release the front. They have a tendency to catch again when you go to the next one...you'll just have to play with it a bit. once that is open you'll see the other little plastic tab that holds the switch assembly . Don't forget to UNPLUG the power supply.

My dell dimension 8400 bios a03 fails to bootup and displays this alert on the screen: Many attempts to boot the system have failed at checkpoint [Ithr]. how can i recover from this?

You need to reset your bios settings. Open your case and remove the cmos battery for 10 minutes. Caution: unplug all ac plugs before you open your case. put the battery back in and turn it on you should see an error message saying: you need to set system time and date. If you see this then you have successfully reset your bios settings and the defaults should load up. follow the instructions to change your time and date settings and save. reboot and hopefully you can boot up. I hope this works.
