Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I powered up the laptop but the desktop will not show on screen even though the screen to choose which user to sign on as still displays. I have tried a restart both with the power cord connected and on battery with the same results. I am also able to access the F2 System utilities. Any ideas? thanks Dave

What I suspect here is a problem with either the VGA driver or the resolution of your LCD Display.

In this case, I would suggest that you do this:

First of all verify that the system can log onto the desktop by starting it up in safe mode-
To start it in safe mode, do this: when you power on your system, keep tapping the F8 button, and then select safe mode, and allow it to boot.

If it boots onto your desktop succesfully in safe mode(where the graphics will not look so good), then what you just need to do is to update your VGA driver. I recommend updating the driver directly from the internet because by doing this you will get the best driver and the latest version of it.

Second, tap F8 again while its booting, and select enable VGA mode, then boot and see what happens.

To update the driver for your VGA directly from the internet, do this:
Power on your system, tap F8 as before, but this time around select Safe mode with networking, so that you will be able to connect to the internet.

After this, right-click on my computer---> then properties---> then select device manager.
On the device manager page, select display adapter, and right-click on the drivers that is shown on the pull-down menu, and select "update driver software".

You will then be taking to a page where you will be asked if you want to update directly from the internet or not.

Select that it shoud update directly from the internet directly, and wait for it to finish.

try these processes out and let me know how it goes. Also let me know which operating system you are using.

Hope this helps you out.

Goodluck and thank you for using Fixya.

Why laptop screen goes black after plugging battery charger?

Try another charger and then see or it might be a power options issue

Try this

SOLUTION: If you have a second computer, use Remote Desktop by choosing 'Run', type 'mstsc', type the name of the computer with a black screen, and connect. After logging in, open 'Control Panel', and choose 'Power Options'. On the left panel choose 'Choose when to turn off the display'. On the row labeled 'Adjust plan brightness', under the 'Plugged in' column, turn up the brightness slider.

Re post emachine t5062 will not start, can't go to website previously suggestes, because I can't get to desktop. keeps wanting me to sign in as other user even thou no other user exsists

Using a very critical timing on Windows Startup, usually within about 2-3 seconds after powering on the system, press the F8 function key until you successfully have the timing right that enables you to start the PC in Safe Mode...(the exact timing will typically be when the first text on the screen disappears and BEFORE the next screen appears, but each system is different by a tad).

Look for the option to start the PC with the last known good configuration settings....

That should fix the problem!

The screen on my desktop was turning off by itself when i finaly plugged it back up completely it turns out to be zoomed in really large, even though my computer says its still at 100% like normal, how do...

Go to control panel. Choose display. On the box menu change your resolution which fits on your screen. It has to be higher than the one it is showing now. Save.

if you mean that just shows a bue screen and no task bar or desktop ..this is probably from a virus attack that cause it ..Try to press ctrl+alt+del this should show the task manager and in the task manager run a new tas ...and lunch the windows explorer again ..
or just run from task manager the system restore..and try to restore it to an earlier date that worked..To do that pres those like I said ..and than in the task manager on screen choose file and new task (run) and type system restore..and hit enter ..ths should run it ...choose the date that you know it worked and run it ..If it do not restore you have to reinstall or use it for the moment find the desktop address and add it in the start-up for that run MSconfig and press enter the start menu ..choose normal ..and enter ..and choose restart should get along well again..

I accidently changed my desktop screen size, how do i go back to default settings. my screen is so small windows dont fit. i was trying to make my icons smaller and i accidently made my screen size...

In Windows Vista, right-click on an empty spot on the desktop, choose Personalize, choose Display Settings, adjust the Resolution on the sliding bar. In XP it's similar except you choose Properties instead of Personalize. I don't have XP in front of me right now. :)

One of 2 things happened....
1) You Blew the Power Inverter... The Power inverter is a thin rectangular circuit board that plugs into the display panel cable and also powers the LCD Bulb.. If This Part Fails - You Lose Light to the Display even though the display will still be on and viewable against a bright light....

2) The LCD Bulb is Faulty... When the LCD Bulb Fails it will typically give pre-warning signs- though not always.... It will give signs like the whole screen has a light orange or pinkish tone to it, but eventually it will blow and no light at all to the Display Panel....

Both Of These Are Repairable....

The Power Inverter Can Be Purchased Off of Ebay, For Around $15 to $30

The LCD Bulb Itself is also Replaceable.. Though It is a Job Only to Be Performed By An Experienced Laptop Tech... Bulbs as well can be bought off of ebay for a few bucks..

Powers up but black screen shows

1st - Try pressing <Fn> + <BrithnessUP> keys a few times, (on HP <Fn> key is between <Ctrl> key and <Windows> key, <BrightnessUP> key is <F8> key and <BrightnessDown> key is <F7> key. If nothing happens try the 2nd one.
2nd - Plugin external monitor, (type and size doesn't matter). Turn on your laptop. If you can see desktop on the external monitor, your drivers are o.k., The problem is your laptop display, NOT the graphic chip.
