Hello,

What I would suggest you should do is this,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0

port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore

might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

Then, depending on your operating system,

Right-Click on 'My Computer Icon', then select 'Manage'.

When you get to Computer Management page,

Click on Disk Management on left hand side,

This will display ALL the disks installed on your system, either partitioned or not partitioned,

formatted or not formatted.

Then go to the ones that are hidden, not created, or not displayed, right-click on it, then you'll see

different actions that you can perform.

Also, in some instances, what you just need to do when you get to this page is to assign a new,

distinct, drive letter apart from the ones already in use on the system.

This will automatically bring out the hidden drives.

Hope I have helped you out.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it goes.

Goodluck and thank you for using fixya.

My vaio laptop with windows XP will not "see" an

Hi mpetersen809,

When you connect your external hard drive, does Windows chime or show an "installing devices" pop-up in the lower right corner of your screen? If this occurs, but you can't see the drive under "My Computer," your external drive might be trying to use a drive letter that's already in use by another device. To resolve this issue, you can manually set the drive letter for your external drive:
  1. Right-click My Computer and choose "Manage." A "Computer Management" window will appear.
  2. In the right pane, under "Storage," click "Disk Management."
  3. Locate your external drive at the bottom of the right pane. Disk 0 is your laptop's internal hard drive, so your external drive will probably be named "Disk 1" or "Disk 2."
  4. Right-click the area of the drive that says "Healthy (Primary Partition)" and select "Change drive letter and paths."
  5. Click the "Change" button, then select an unused drive letter (like Y or Q) from the drop-down menu and click "OK."
  6. Click "Yes" to confirm that you want to change the drive letter.
  7. Close the Computer Management window, then open My Computer to see whether your external drive is visible.
If this doesn't work, there could be a problem with the external drive. Test the drive by plugging it into another computer. If the drive isn't recognized on the second computer, contact Iomega for warranty support or replace the drive.

Good luck!

Hi my ibm thinkpad r51 laptop starts up as normal, showing the windows xp logo.but after that the screen goes black but i can hear things on the desktop.pls i need ur help.thanx

Your laptop could have a back light problem.
If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Can't Find Hard Drive.

Go into the notebooks bios and see if there is a boot from USB in the boot sequence section. If there is, then enable it. If there is none, then it will never boot from an external drive.

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........

Hi there! I bought a 320g Toshiba external hard drive in April 2006 and it worked a treat, however I tried to switch it on over the weekend and you can hear the bits spinning inside and the blue light...

Hi,

First i want you to make sure that the external hard drive is working. Try it on another computer and see.
If it works in other system, then Right click ' My Computer ' in your system and select
' properties' and then ' Device manager' and scan for the hardware......
Hope this will work only when your external hard drive works on other system but fails on your system.

If other system also not able to detect the external hard drive , then it has failed.

Failure of these units is often (but not always) heat related.
They are also more likely to suffer impact damage as it's far easier for these drives to fall out of bags or off of tables etc.

Recovery possibilities: Entirely dependent on the nature of the problem. Heat associated problems are often easier to tackle than impact damage problems.

You can fix this problem and recover your data,
by calling DATA CLINIC 0870 140 2525
http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/

They will provide you with further assitance.

Hope my info fix your problem,
Thanx for using fixya,
Cheers.
