About a week after installing Tiger, my G4 867 powerbook froze while browsing RSS feeds in Safari, and I had to manually shut down. Now, the system folder cannot be found at startup, the hard drive cannot be found when trying to run Disk Utility with the Tiger install Disk, and there is no drive detected to re-install the OS. Resetting -pram -nvram, or -all in Open Firmware does nothing. AppleCare says it's a new one on them, so I have to take it to the Apple Store across town for advanced diagnostics. Any ideas? I'm planning to go to the Apple Store tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully they will be able to do something. I think I preferred the pre-Apple Store days when I would just fedex it to be fixed, and have it back in 48 hours... Thanks, NB

I do think that if you have more than one Mac then it helps to use a reasonably professional synch and backup solution. I've only stumbled on my system as a result of a couple of disaster, having a PB stolen and then another PB going down completely. Tiger should take care of ical and address synching via. .mac. I reckon it is better to use a dedicated Synch solution to kepe files up to date rather than relying on a simple copy across.
I use You Synchronize to keep project folders fully synched. This works well enough and is pretty reasonably priced. Others are complimentary about Chronosynch which will set you back about $30 - this probably looks like the best bet as it seems to index all of your files rather then transferring individual folder/projects as YS does.
I also keep two other regular, working, backups. The first is a backup up of my (synched) Documents folder, which works with an external Smartdrive; this backup I carry out every week. The second is a monthly backup of all of my desktop Mac's data to a large La Cie disk, a bit of overkill this but as I have the discspace I will use it. And then I keep[ backups of current work projects on .mac as well!
Do a Google search and you will find many Mac users, and mags, who strongly recommend DiskWarrior. After my directory problems I now run DW every month as well! It kind of gives me piece of mind!
I'm not really technical enough to understand what happened when my PB went down, except that 18 months of use had stacked up a load of problems with permissions, etc.

I'm getting the 1.42 with a gig of ram, and Applecare. The tibook is in pretty good shape, so I'm hoping I'll get more than the quote I received once they examine it. Plus, it comes with Tiger and iLife '05, so I will sell them, since I already own copies of both. Should come out to an even trade, almost! The Mini will be better for my needs right now, anyway. Thanks, NB

I'd rather hope unless you are really speccing up the mini it would be worth more than the mini ;) New HDs for the PB shouldn't be too pricey [1] and I think the 667s are one of the easy ones to fit too.
[1] 20gb from ??30, 40gb from ??40 60gb from ??50 [2] [2] All prices +vat I'm afraid and only a quick scan of eBuyer for the prices. -- Jon B real email to usenet at jonbradbury dot com

This is somewhat bizarre and doesn't square with the experience of others. I installed Tiger on three Macs - iMac, PB and iBook without any problems. Do you Synch between the two of them? Makes me thing there is a common directory or file problem on the computers.

*What* happened to your PB, Andy?
Please don't top post in ucsm (or anywhere, to be civilised). Just quote what you need to make sense of the previous message, and follow it with your reply. -- Peter

Yes, I did sync them, and also with .Mac. Hope the problem will not repeat if I sync the repaired PB, and Mini Mac with .Mac when I get them back this week! I had also backed everything up on my iPod in preparation for 10.4. The tibook seems to be fine now, hopefully it will be accepted as a trade-in toward the Mini. I really panicked when I say that folder with the "?" again! Should I avoid using my back-ups and syncing? Would Disk Warrior be able to identify where the problem is before I restore my data? Thanks, I appreciate your help. NB

The Genius at the Apple Store said that the hard drive was not detected and had to be replaced. The next day my other powerbook (667 tibook), upgraded to Tiger, froze, and showed the same folder with the question mark after a forced reboot. The hard drive was making a sort of tapping noise, as well! Luckily it started up correctly on the next try! The tibook is just past the extended warranty ;-( ... I have ordered a Mac Mini, just in case it becomes a large paperweight! It is nice to have the option of buying a less expensive second Mac! I think that both Powerbooks failing within days of installing Tiger is not a good sign... Thanks, NB

This happened to my Powerbook earlier in the year (before Tiger). Indeed, as this intermittent problem got worse I began to assume that this was hardware related. My dealer thought the same and sent the machine off to be looked at. The problems were purely hard disc/file related and they simply ran Diskwarrior and rebuilt the disks directory, etc. This cost me ??160 - I have since bought Diskwarrrior myself - ??70.
You could try booting from CD and running Disk Utility - but beware that Tiger creates its Disk directories differently to Panther.
It is probably best to take it into an Applestore but it might be worth getting a copy of Diskwarrior. I now run this on both my desktop machine and my Powerbook once a month - it always manages to throw up a number of faults, problems with permissions, etc.
My Powerbook has a lot of data on it and a lot of shareware programmes. A year's heavy usage just seemed to have slowly bought everything to a halt! Maintaining the directory regularly even gives you a noticeable increase in performance.
