If you have a SIM card slot, then buy a SIM card in the country your going to and activate that new account. Your straighttalk account only works in the USA. But your phone will work world wide if it has a SIM card.
Ill keep this short. If you are gonna be in that new country for a short while and then return back to the original country of your SIM card, then you can register for 'Roaming' with a local phone company there.
If you will now be living in that new country for more than a few months, then you might as well throw away your old SIM card and get a new one there with a new carrier (phone company). Cause Roaming is expensive and is mainly targeted for business travelling people.

Easiest thing is to contact att, tell them you are traveling outside the country for a month, and need your phone unlocked so you can use one of the cheap prepaid SIM cards that you can buy where you are traveling to. If they don't do it, wait 10 minutes, and try again, hopefully getting a different, more helpful operator.

I have a question does your friend's Simcard have a Security Code? Because i think the phone and the simcard have both security codes.
If your friend doesn't remember putting any security code try using its default security code: 12345
If this doesn't solve the problem then you already need a cellphone repair shop to factory reset your phone by using a flasher..
hope this help
