Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hi all! I have a 4 year old PC with 2 HD's , one is IDE and the other one which is newer is SATA. Once in while i get this boot error saying NTDLR is missing. What the computer does is resets the hard drives so boot is made from the IDE drive while the windows is installed on the SATA one. When i get this error , i open the BIOS setup and change the HD's order so the SATA is the main one and the IDE is the secondary. After i do this all is going back to normal for another few weeks. what can i do in order to prevent the hard drives to reset it self ? Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your quick response.
I have WIN7 Ultimate on the SATA HDD and the IDE HDD has no any OS installed on it, it just resets the drives order once a month or once a few weeks.
Regarding the antivirus, i have an updated Eset Smart Security installed so i doubt it is a virus problem.

You question is not very clear. When you set the BIOS, you say it works well for several weeks. Does it change again automatically? If this is the case, replace the CMOS battery. (Usual battery model is CR2032).
If you have WinXP installed on both HDDs, set to view hidden and system files, and copy the NTLDR file from SATA disk to the IDE disk. If your NTLDR files goes missing from time to time, it is definitely a virus. Use a reputed AntiVirus software (I recommend Kaspersky).
If it is a boot virus, - first backup your files to CDs. - Remove partitions from both HDDs.
- Reset the BIOS. - Restart the computer and install OS. - Install a good VirusGuard.

Thank you for your quick response!
On the SATA HDD i have WIN7 ultimate and on the IDE HDD i have no OS installed.
After windows resets drive order i go to the BIOS, change back the drive order, reboot and then i recieve a message : "Overclocking Failed! Please enter Setup to re-configure your system.
    Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue"
when i press F2 the problem disappears and everything works fine for couple of weeks before it repeats all over again.
regarding the antivirus: i have updated ESET smart security and antivirus installed so i doubt it is a virus problem.
    Thank you!

Hi!
According to your mob specs ( 2 x ATA 133/100/66 IDE connectors ( supports 4 x IDE devices)), it does not support Sata2; however, if you configured your HD to Sata1, then check your FSB and set it to 400MHZ.
Jumper Setting 400:FSB_SEL1 : 1_2 FSB_SEL2 : 2_3

I hope this helps; nontheless, I also hope you can exchange the HD to a regular Sata.

What's the difference between AHCI and IDE in SATA?

1.IDE is an old interface standard used for storage devices while AHCI is an application programming interface for the newer SATA interface.
2.Most SATA controllers allow you to choose between AHCI and IDE among other operation modes.
3.AHCI has advanced features like NCQ and hot plugging that is not available with IDE.
4.Switching from IDE to AHCI or vice versa after the operating system is installed can lead to problems.

Therefore, in BIOS, when you choose AHCI interface your HDD behaves like a SATA one and when you choose IDE it behaves like an IDE one.

Will not start up,it says'interupted opetation:insert the recovery cd or another media and reboot your pc...

I had this to a computer I was building recently. I reversed the ide cables (my motherboard had 4 ide cables); I had the hard drives connected to ide cable 1 and cdroms connected to ide cable 2........reversed that and it booted right up! Go figure. Easy solution. Hope it will work for you. Your cables may be Sata if it's a newer model, just reverse the sata cables.

Flashing Toshiba satellite 1800-S204

Hi

You query did not give any clues abt the PC/Motherboard and its BIOS revision.

That said if the PC/BIOS will not "see" the HDD then its is unlikely a cause of a virus.

Some old motherboards can't recognise a HDD if its size is more than 137GB. Some older motherboard also require than you set the HDD jumper correctly (Master or Slave).

At this stage, i am assuming the HDD in question is PATA or IDE (Old Spec). If the HDD is SATA (New Spec), then you will need a SATA port to connect the HDD. Ensure not to use both "old" molex power connector and "newer" SATA power connector together.

If the HDD is SATAII but the SATA spec for your motherboard is SATAI (initial spec), some motherboards and SATAII drives require that you jumper the HDD to allow it to work at the lower SATA speed.

If none of the above points apply try upgrading your system BIOS of the latest version. Also review the mortarboard's manual for more info.

Regards
Mike
