Sometimes, this is caused by the governor needing adjusting, but most of the time it is that the carburetor needs a good internal cleaning. Try adding about 1 ounce of Berryman Chem Tool to a gallon of gas that you use and letting it run through it. This is the "lazy" way to clean the carb without removing it. Sea Foam brand cleaner and Lucas will also benefit this problem.

Lawn Mower Surges

Check valves. Vacuum from the engine draws the fuel in...sounds like vacuum is surging. Also it may have a "fuel pump" that may be bad

What could be the issue?

Most electrical appliances are fitted with a device to prevent them emitting radio frequency interference. Some such devices do not age well or resist spikes or surges in the supply.

The problem could be with that device. I notice they tend to produce white smoke when they fail, whereas wiring and motors, switches and suchlike tend to produce an altogether darker and more acrid smoke.

I just bought a new toro mower. the engine surges in speed about 1/sec. how can i get it to run smoothly?

If this is a brand new mower you could take it to the shop where you purchased it. I will say that newer units are set to run pretty lean to meet emission standards and may surge a bit when not under a load. You could take a look at the carb and see if there are any adjustment screws visible. A minor turn with a screwdriver may solve your problem, probably turn the screw out about 1/4 turn or so, just until the surging stops. Many of the new machines today do not have any owner adjustable parts. If you don't feel comfortable trying this, please supply a model number off the mower and more info might be available.

Engine speed surges

Surging engines in lawn mowers are usually related to a lean fuel/air mixture. With today's environmental concerns, the carburetors on these engines are set with a very lean mixture (to reduce air pollution). Furthermore, they usually put limiter caps on the carburetors where you cannot easily adjust the mix to get the engine to run better.

If there are adjustment screws on the carburetor, try turning the high speed adjustment screw a bit counter-clockwise (if the limiter cap will allow it). This will enrich the fuel/air mix a bit and might help the engine run a bit better.

Toro 6.5 hp 9 year old mower. Starts Ok; surges

Sounds like your carburetor needs to be cleaned out. The surging is usually a sign of running to lean (not getting enough gas) because of possible water, rust, gum, varnish or trash in your carb. Hope that helps.....

2 1/2 Briggs......doesn't run smoothly....surges at all speeds.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.
