Question about Dell Computers & Internet

2 Answers

My Dell Dimension 8400 started with the BSO on the 7th. Tried the reinstall disk that came with the computer to no avail. Contacted technical support (in India and hardly understandable) and they were not that helpful). I purchased a new reinstall disk and tried reinstalling but that didn't work either. Now I am getting another BSOD say UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Which is telling me that no longer is findin the SATA drive. What the hell do I do Know? Coloradosue

Hi--could be one or combination of issues --

i think you have a failed hard drive.

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

also,

This can be the result of several other problems:

1. You are using a 40 conductor cable instead of an 80 conductor UDMA/ATA100/133 ribbon cable... and is the most common cause.
2.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted or booted. A repair install or a full format and reinstall may be required.
3. The BIOS settings are configured for the faster UDMA drive, and you are using a slower drive. Load the Fail-Safe settings then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB support.

If the second parameter (0xbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0xC0000032, then the file system is damaged. Usually you can repair this by restarting your computer to the Repair Console, then use chkdsk /r to repair the volume. Once you have repaired the volume, carefully inspect your hardware to determine the reason for the file system damage.

More than likely the hard drive has crashed, swap the old hard drive out with a new one and then use the reinstall discs. Did you have any files you needed off the old drive?

Dell 8400 Boots to Black Error Screen in XP States to reinstall System 32

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

No boot device available- strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utility

you can try this steps to resolve your issue:
1. clean your disc drive with white cloth and alcohol
2. try to re-install the OS
3. if this won't work try to download another boot disk like EBCD
or ask a friend to create you a boot disc and try to boot your computer with it.

- This can rule out or confirm a Bad Windows OS disc, thus let's you install you Windows OS in the process.

4. try to re-install again the OS
