Question about Navico Simrad Tillerpilot TP20 ()

Open Question

Hi - I have a Simrad Navico tp20 and used for the first time today the tack function, it worked fine for a couple of times then on one tack, pushed the tiller hard over (as expected) but then 'stuck' into that position. I tried switching the instrument on and off as well as manually setting the position without success. I switched the TP20 off again and tried pushing the rod back in gently, again without luck - it seems to be stuck pretty well. Also, when I tried manually adjusting course I could hear the usual kind of noise coming from inside the TP20 , just without the movement of the rod.

Turn on normally, go to press auto.... nothing

Hi Ty
This sounds to me like a cabling problem. There is enough "horsepower" to turn the unit on, but the increased current required to actually run the thing isn't as robust as it needs to be.

I would start by checking the connections at the panel or battery. Make sure these are absolutely pristine. (i.e. Clean and tight) Pay particular attention to the terminals and/or crimp connectors, whichever are used. It doesn't take much corrosion here to render the autopilot inoperable. Let me know how you make out.

My Ap16 Simrad control head died. Any idea of as to 1) where I might get it repaired and/or 2) where I might find a replacement?

Hi John

Boy, you're up against it on this one. The AP16 is a pretty old unit for sure. Here's the link to your owners manual.

I've come across one instance in my experience where although there was enough power showing to the control head, because of corrosion and broken wire strands, there simply was too much voltage drop and not enough current flow for the unit to function when it was turned on. After cutting back/fixing the soldered connections and reconnecting the cable, the unit was good to go.

I hope this information is able to help you out.
Good luck.
