Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I bought a computer a few months ago from Best Buy. Already programmed. Anyway, I'm trying to create a word document and it's asking for a product key. However, I don't have any software packaging etc, because everything was preloaded. Is there a place where I can access the product key?

Usually the new machines come with a trial version of Microsoft Office. Is it most likely that your version of Office is expired, so you can either buy a copy of Office, or use a different program instead like OpenOffice which is free.

Most computers have the trial version pre installed which is Microsoft's way of letting you test drive the program. After 60 days when you have already used it and have several documents created they pull the rug from under your feet. If Best Buy sold you the individual copy of Microsoft Word or Office you will have a plastic case with the activation key inside that can only be viewed when you slide the case open. If you have a receipt with Microsoft Office you can try to call Microsoft for a new activation key. If you do not have a receipt for Microsoft Office you can find the best price and purchase it. You will not have to reinstall the program, all you need to do is open the software case and look on the back for the activation key. Enter the activation key and you will be able to use the programs. I hope this helps and you indeed purchased the Microsoft Office at the time of the computer purchase.

You are entering the Windows 7 key which is on the bottom of the computer. You need a Office key which you get when you buy the program. See my tip for more details.

Please help me with a 25 digit product key. My computer had the trial version when i bought it a few months back and now it is asking for a product key. Help! do i have to buy one

Microsoft will let you download a trail version from their site or as in your case it was installed by the computer manufacture but after 25 uses, you either buy it or it quits. I always recommend the Student version which you can buy from most stores. The store you bought your computer from probably had a discounted version available when you bought the computer.

A better solution is to use a free compatible version from www.OpenOffice.org or use the online free version from M$ at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/. You can set the default file types in OpenOffice to the standard Microsoft types, i.e. .doc, .xls, etc

Another alternative is to use Google Documents.

Let me know if this works for you.

Bought a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 on it.

The laptop was likely to be pre-installed with a trial version of MS office. You would have to buy a full version to get a product key with it. You can just cancel (ie close) the window where it asks you for a product key and continue to use the trial version. There will either be a time limit (ie 30 days from first use) or you will have only limited options while using this trial.
Either way, as said before, you can buy the full version from microsoft (which isn't cheap) or just download open office here. This has pretty much all the functionality of MS Office but it's free. A third alternative - which is what I do, is to just use google documents - check it out here

Hope that helps

Asking for product key

Unfortunately most places only sell their laptop with Trial Versions of the software. If your laptop was advertised with the full version and you do not have your product key, go back to your retailer and tell them you did not receive your key. 9 nine chances out of ten thought, it was only a trial version that came with your system and you will have to purchase a key to get it legally. The thing with the trial version is that your are only able to create/edit up to 25 documents, after that you can only view them. That being said, if you have a document that you are working on, you should be able to copy it from word into another word processor such as wordpad.

Go back to best buy, somebody may have already used keygen and used your license key which is why its no good. Microsoft won't help you but simply tell you to go back to where you bought your laptop. I know, that sucks.
