Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

My Kenmore Limited Edition, model # 110.23912.100 will not spin or agitate. Everything else seems to work OK but it just doesn't spin. I noticed a burnt smell earlier today. Does this unit have a belt or does it use clutches? Unit is a few years old so I may just replace it if the cost of fixing it is too much. Need help.

Checked the unit and the motor is running. Lid switch is working. Would you happen to know where I could get instructions on how to dismantle the unit so i can check the pulley or remove the pump.

Hi, if it doesn't spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows: If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt/burnt pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken/burnt or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt. If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

SOURCE: Kenmore Washing Machine Model 23912-100

you may have spin tube grease leaking into the clutch causing the clutch to slip during spin and then not getting up to full spin speed. it is common and will require you to replace the clutch. its not an easy job for the do it yourselfer as you need to remove the transmission to get to the clutch.

Kenmore model 110.92585110. During the spin cycle, I heard a rattling type noise. I opened the lid and all the water had drained, but the tub was not spinning.

You would have to open the case or use a syringe with correct oil but not sure if a syringe that size could push that viscosity of oil through... But only a table spoon is nothing compares to what it holds. It might be the gear case that caused your coupler to round out as it may have seized for a second? Usually when the old couplers without steel insert break they crack and explode not round out. Couldn't tell you for sure without seeing it in person, sorry.

You might as well go ahead and replace the machine, the cost to repair this problem is going to shock you.

Washer will not spin or agitate. Pump works.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

First, see the following Whirlpool Kenmore installation and service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

If it drains and you can hear the motor trying to turn the transmission for the agitate mode, the obvious first answer is the Motor coupler. I'd replace it just to be sure.

If it's not the Coupler, the problem points to the transmission itself.

There are only two components of the gearcase that are used for both agitating and spinning.

One is the Agitator shaft which drives the agitator and holds the spin pinion that drives the clutch for spinning.

The other is the main "Bottom and pinion gearcase" itself.

Please see the following Whirlpool parts list for commercial top load direct drive washers although the consumer models use the same transmission parts.

My kemore 80 series washer wont spin

Problem 1. Major gear sounding grinding during spin mode. Major vibration also.

Problem 2. Spin problem. Most times the washer would drain but wouldn't spin unless the lid was raised and lowered. (According to wife, this problem has been on-going for two years).

After checking motor coupling (a bit worn but intact), drive block (you don't need a spanner wrench to remove it, a 12 - 14 inch pipe wrench works great) which was OK, clutch, seemed OK, we determined that the problems were in the transmission.

Two options, 1 spend $150 plus for a transmission.
2. Open it up and see if anything seemed seriously bad.

After looking at the transmission parts list (available on a number of sites) and on the Whirlpool site (Whirlpool makes Kenmore)

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

the first problem seemed to be related to the agitator cam and cam follower not raising the agitator gear high enough (probably less than a 1/16th of an inch) above the agitator cam.

Found the right part number (Whirlpool part # 62580 / 81) which includes both the cam and follower. Bought one for about $10.50, installed it, put washer back together and problem 1 was solved.

Looked again at parts list and noticed that the one of the cams in the neutral assembly which is supposed to have a small spring, didn't on ours when we tore the transmission apart again.

Those cams/gears etc. keep the washer from spinning until all of the water is pumped out and then go into spin mode. Apparently, by opening and closing the lid, torque from the motor starting throws the cams into the right gears so that the washer will spin.

Found the part number for a kit (Whirlpool part number 388253 Neutral Assembly) for $15.00 and replaced the cams and gears.

Put the washer back together and I now have a happy wife. Everything works as it should.

NOTE. Fixing the washer takes a little mechanical ability (wrenches, socket sets, screw drivers, vice grips, short pipe wrench) and a solid desire to save some money.

All told parts cost less than $30 (I also replaced the old transmission oil with 80-90 weight oil from an auto parts store) saving over $125.

Washer does spin but barely agitates

It sounds like the agitator dogs are worn.
To remove the agitator, pry off the agitator cap and remove the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out pull up on the top section of the agitator (auger) to remove it. Underneath the auger you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). . Replace those and it should be ok.

The part number is 80040

Let me know if you need more assistance.
Good luck!
