The first four lights should be on. Internet / PC Link / Cable Link / Cable Activity. The "PC Link" and "Cable Activity" lights will blink. The "Internet" and "Cable Link" lights should be solid green. That's 4 lights on when all is good. I hope that this will help.

Any questions you may still have I will be glad to answer.

Thanks,
JHH

Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem User Guide
The user guide for your Motorola Surfboard cable modem can mean the difference between knowing how to locate and diagnose problems with your connection or staring angrily into a maze of blinking lights.

The user guide provides information on properly setting up your cable modem, understanding the indicator lights and troubleshooting problems before you have to call your Internet Service Provider.Connecting Your Modem

Your Motorola Surfboard cable modem must be connected to your home's coaxial cable connection.
Connect the coaxial cable from your cable outlet into the "Input" jack on your cable modem.

If your modem is wireless, it will connect to any computers and wireless devices in your home through the wireless signal sent from the modem.

Wired Internet connections require that you use an Ethernet cable to connect your cable modem to any supported computers and devices.
Understanding the Front Panel

The front panel of your modem is your key to understanding the status of your cable modem.

The front panel features "Power," "Send," "Receive," "Online" and "Link" lights, each of which displays information about your modem.

The "Power" button will display a solid green light when operating normally and will turn off when there is a problem with the power supply.

The "Send" and "Receive" lights will transmit a solid green or blue color when data is being normally transmitted through your modem and will blink when it the modem is scanning for an upstream or downstream connection.

A solid green "Online" light indicates that you are connected to your Internet Service Provider, while no light indicates that the Internet connection in your home is experiencing problems.

A yellow "Link" light indicates that a computer is connected to your modem with an Ethernet connection while a blue light indicates that a high-speed Ethernet connection is being utilized through the modem.

Configuring TCP/IP

The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol provides the basic foundation for establishing a local network and a connection to the Internet. The TCP/IP can be configured in the "Control Panel" of your Windows computer. Open the "Network and Sharing Center" from the control panel and double-click the "Manage network connections" option. Right-click the network connection displayed and select "Properties," then select Internet Protocol Version 4 and open the TCP/IP properties menu. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" from the TCP/IP properties menu and click "Ok" to save your TCP/IP settings.
Troubleshooting

Many technical issues with your cable modem can be resolved by power cycling your modem and the computers and devices connected to it.

To power cycle your modem, unplug it from the power supply for 10 to 15 seconds and reconnect it to the power supply.

Restart all of your connected computers and devices while your modem is power cycling. Problems with the "Send" and "Receive" functions can be the result of a poor signal being sent to your cable modem. Tighten the coaxial cable connection to your modem and contact your internet service provider if problems persist.

After connecting only top two of the modems lights are on and no internet

I'm assuming one is power. The other one is a cable light, either the cable that eventually runs back to your provider or the cable to your computer or router. You need all of these cables for this to work. Double check that the modem is both plugged into the wall and a device. If it is, you need to call your provider and have them send a start signal to your modem.

After connecting modem to pc, the link light in modem was orange, the others were all green, of course, pc can not surf internet. Try to restart and change modem location, issue persists

Hi,

Good day.You can do the following to make your connection work.

1. You need to make sure that the cable connection between your modem and wall outlet is tight.
2. Ethernet cable should be detected when plugged in to your pc ( usually a pop up on your screen will tell that)
3. Link light means there's a conenction between your pc and cable modem.
4. You might need to check if the online light or cable light on the modem is on to make sure that your modem is getting a signal from your cable internet provider. If its off you need to contact your internet provider because there could be an issue or possible outage on your line.
5. You can also try to restart your computer once its connected to the modem to refresh the ip address of your pc.
6 You can also contact the tech support number for your internet provider for them to diagnose the issue.

Hope this information will help resolve you're problem. Have a great day and thanks for using Fixya.

My motorola SB5101 cable modem is connected properly. The power light is green but the receive light is keep on blinking other lights was turn off (send, etc.). Does my modem has a problem?

This light pattern indacates that the modem can not establish a connection to your internet service provider (ISP). This is typically do to a signal related issue. To trouble shoot the problem you will need to connect the modem directly to the main cable line where it first enters into the home. You will know when the modem establishes a connection by the top 4 lights becoming solid green. If at any point all 4 top green lights start to blink in sequence than you will need to contact your internet service provider to "unwall the modem". Remember most internet service providers require you to register new modems on there network. So if you have not all ready completed that process you will most likely not have access. If you can not get a connection from the main line than there is a issue with either the modem or the signal coming into the home and you will need to contact your internet service provider.

I hope that information above has helped is some way.
If possible please rate this solution.

How to reset moorola modem sb1520 surfboard

hi, to reset the modem follow these steps.

step 1 : Turn the Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem so that the back of it is accessible to you. There's no need to disconnect any of the cables.

step 2 : Find the "Reset" button on the modem. It's a small recessed button located between the USB port and the cable outlet.

step 3: Use a pointed instrument to push the button. Hold it for 10 to15 seconds to allow time for the modem's indicator lights to go off.

step 4 : Release the Reset button. The lights will gradually begin to come on as the modem connects to the communications channels between the cable provider, the computer and the Internet provider. When all the connections are made, the lights will stablize.

step 5 : Release the Reset button. The lights will gradually begin to come on as the modem connects to the communications channels between the cable provider, the computer and the Internet provider. When all the connections are made, the lights will stablize.

The power does not come on

Would request you to try some of undermentioned steps, this would help you identify what is the main issue:

  1. Try different power source or outlet. Make sure that the power socket is working properly.
  2. Unplug all cables from back of modem & plug only power cable. If power light does not come on, then you might need to get modem or power adapter changed.
  3. If power light comes on, then plug sat in & out cable, if light goes off then issue could be with these cables & you might need to call your ISP provider to send installer & look after the dish.
  4. If power light is still on, then plug lan cable & if light goes off then you need to change LAN Cable.

Cable modem connection problem

Hi, First of all that particular modem is an End of Life modem (meaning it is no longer recieving updated firmware). But that still does not neccesarily mean that its your modem what you need to do when your modem cuts out is to note the leds on the front of your modem. If the modem gets stuck on either the 2nd light from the top or the third light then it is definitely a cable problem. Contact your cable co and tell the tech what lights were stuck blinking while you could not get online and he will know what that means. If you need some more help let me know, because I can explain more. good luck

Cable light off

Your cable signal is low.If you have any splitters remove them.there is only one single cable that should go to the modem out to the box on the house then inside the box the cable for the modem should be on a 2 way splitter, the input is from the cable service, one output goes directly to the modem and the other output usaully goes to another splitter that runs the rest of the TVs in the house.basically the modem needs "priority" or first dibs on the bandwidth coming to the house.
