If it won't start, try connecting it to your computer and see if you can get a firmware update to turn it on. Otherwise I would send it into garmin since there aren't replaceable parts for consumers.

I had the exact same problem and thought my beloved forerunner 305 had finally died. Try pressing the lap and mode keys simultaneously, and then power on. That may do a "soft reset." Worked for me.
