Built-in flash does not work even in a MASP mode

This often depends on the shooting mode you are using. It is often on a selection wheel. Say you are in Fireworks mode the flash will not fire. If you get out of a special mode back into normal camera I am pretty sure your flash will not be greyed out.

Flash off mode and want flash on

The Burst setting takes a series of photos, and as such the flash is not usuable as it would not charge fast enough.

I suggest you inititialize the camera -

    Turn camera on
    Press Menu
Scroll all way across to the right to 'Setup'
Scroll down to the 3rd icon
hit righ hand scroll button, then down to Initialize
    Across and up to OK
Hit middle key, then up to OK again and middle key

Camera will turn off, then on at date setting screen
Set the date, and camera will be back to factory seting with the burst off, and flash modes available :)

    Flash pre-firing like mad?

It is your camera using the flash to assist in focusing, if it bothers you you can change it in your menus, I have a XTi so yours will differ slightly.
Switch your camera to "P" mode.
    Press "Menu" button.
    Go to setup menu 3
scroll down to "Custom Functions (C Fn.)"
    Press "set".
press to the right until you find "AF - assist beam"
    Press "set".
    And press up or down.
    Set to "Does not emit"
    press "set"
    Press "menu" button twice.

Sb-600 and d80 sync, connecting, off camera..

    1. On the SB 600, activate the custom settings menu by pressing the ZOOM and '-' buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
    2. In the custom settings menu, set the Wireless Remote Flash option (indicated by a curled arrowhead) to 'ON' (use + and - buttons to toggle between options)
    3. Set the flash mode to Master (do not set it as AA or A)
    4. Press Mode button and select one of the four channels available (ensure that you set the camera also on this channel)
    5. On the D80, from custom settings menu, select Built-in-flash
    6. Set the built-in-flash to '--' if you do not want the flash to show up in the scene
    7. Set the mode of the group to i-TTL (this menu can be used to control multiple flashes in different groups. since you are using only one remote flash, select the group you have set in the SB600)
    8. Set the channel to the same as in step 4
Now you are ready to use the remote off-camera flash.

How do i get brighter pictures

There are only two options for adjusting the brightness of pictures in this camera, exposure and flash setting.

    1. Flash Options: The flash is off by default. To turn it on you must press the button with the crooked down-arrow label between the DISP and MENU buttons, and the flash status will display in the top right-hand corner of the display screen. OFF displays the crooked down-arrow and a circle with a line through it. Press the button once for AUTO, displays the crooked down arrow with an "A" next to it. Press the button once more to force the flash, displays the crooked arrow only in the top right-hand display. Regardless of mode, the display will blink rapidly while the flash is charging and remain solid when it is charged and ready for use. Keep pressing the crooked down-arrow button to scroll continuously through the three OFF/AUTO/ON options.

    2. Exposure setting: Press MENU, then the left arrow on the top right-hand four-way button on the camera until the COLOR menu is selected. Scroll down to EXPOSURE and press the MENU button again. You will see EV on the display. Use the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the exposure setting. 0.0 is default, you can go up to +1.5 or down to -1.5. Press MENU to exit when you're done. +1.5 would be the maximum brightness setting.
