Question about Toshiba Satellite A45-S150 Notebook

1 Answer

I need a replacement optical drive for the Toshiba A45-s151. I've googled for an hour and can't find a simple list of possible replacements. Any ideas where to look? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, ikkenom. I've done quite a few computer fixes successfully and replacing the drive in an A45 is a simple matter of removing two screws. I've got my ESD Wihas and ESD mat so I think I can handle it. :)

What about firmware and other software concerns? Could I purchase, say, a Dell drive manufactured for Dell by Teac and have it work ok?

The "good" news is that laptop CD/DVD devices are "generic", i.e., just buy a new one, and it will fit, once you remove the face-plate from the old drive-tray, and connect it to the new drive-tray.

However, replacing a CD/DVD device in a laptop is not a "beginner-level" do-it-yourself project.
Take the computer to a computer-store, and pay them to disassemble your laptop,
remove the old drive, connect the replacement drive, reassemble your laptop, and test it.

The _only_ times that I have had problems using "generic" parts to replace vendor-specific parts have been RAM-related (IBM/Lenovo and especially Dell, who force you to buy Dell RAM to upgrade your Dell). I have never had problems with "generic" CD/DVD drives. The device's "firmware" is inside the device, not inside the computer's motherboard, so it's not a problem updating it.

Thanks, Ikke. Very helpful. What generic laptop optical drives have you used successfully? I'd like to upgrade to a dvd burner, but it's not mandatory. Also, if I see something on eBay that I can afford, could I run it by you to see if it's generic or vendor-specific?

Fan noisey and cmt getting hot on my toshiba a45

Replacing the fan may not be for the faint of heart. Alternatively, buy a can of air & blow the darn thing out. Though not always the best course of action, I sometimes do it with the notebook turned on. This way, I stand a better chance of expelling the gunk than if the fan blades were stationery. Next, I would buy a $15 laptop stand with a usb-pwered cooling fan.

I have a toshiba a45-s151 laptop and the hard drive seems to have more pins then there is holes for where you plug it in.. do i have the wrong hard drive for it

The Toshiba a45-s151 uses a 2.5" Ultra ATA drive. It should slide into the area where the old one came out, label facing you. See the picture.
If the drive is 2.5", the pins will line up with the holes.

Hi,
The hard drive is located under the laptop (near the front) with "disk" icons on it held down with a screw.
Remove the screw and get a thin flat headed screwdriver and gently pull the hard drive cover off, you may hear a couple of crunches but this is normal as it will be the securing tabs coming away.

Good luck.
