If CTRL+F11 is not working the only other option is to boot from the OS CD issued to you by Dell.

1 Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart your computer. If the messagePress any key to boot from the CD... appears, press a key to continue booting to the CD.
2 In the Windows XP Setup screen (Figure 1), press to set up Windows XP.

3 In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, read the license agreement, and then press to scroll through the agreement.

4 Press to accept the terms and conditions specified in the license agreement. The partition screen is displayed. depending on your computer configuration, the partitions listed may include a PC Restore partition (2.7 to 4.75 GB) or a MediaDirect (1.2 GB) partition.

5 Highlight the largest partition and press .

If you are prompted to format the partition, use the up or down arrow keys to highlight Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick). Press or , if applicable, to format the partition. In cases where the drive must be checked for errors, select the Format the partition using the NTFS file system option.

Setup will format the drive, if necessary, then copy the files needed for installation. This process can take several minutes. Once done, Windows will restart the computer to continue Setup from the hard drive.

6 After the computer restarts, Setup continues with a graphical user interface (GUI) in the classic Windows theme. In this stage, you are asked to input information to personalize your installation. Your screen may blink several times during this process, which is normal. The information to input, and the order it is provided, is shown below:

  1. Click Next on the Regional and Language Options window.
  2. In the Personalize Your Software screen, type your name in the Name: field and your organization's name in the Organization: field, if applicable, and click Next.
  3. In the Computer Name screen, type the computer name in the Computer Name: field if you want to change it from the name provided. For Windows XP Professional Edition users, type a password in the Administrator Password:field and then type the same password in the Confirm Password: field.
  4. Click Next.

In the Date and Time Settings screen, verify that the correct Date, Time, andTime Zone appear, and click Next.
  5. In the Networking Settings screen, click to select Typical, and click Next. If available, click Skip to skip the networking setup section. For Windows XP Professional users, click to select No, this computer is not on a network..., and click Next.

Setup will finalize the installation and should complete within 30 minutes of this point. Once complete, the computer will restart.

7 After the computer reboots, the newly installed operating system will attempt to configure itself for your detected devices, however many of your device drivers are not yet installed. Use the following to finish the configuration and prepare the computer for driver installation:

  1. If the Display Settings message appears, click OK.
  2. If a Monitor Settings message appears, click OK.
  3. In the Welcome to Microsoft Windows window, click Next.
  4. In the registration screen, click to select No, not at this time and click Next. You will be prompted to register your computer again later.
  5. In the Do you want to set up Internet access now? window, click to selectNo, not at this time and click Next.
  6. In the Who will use this computer? window, type the user name of your choice in the Your name: text box. Type the name of any additional Users that will be using the computer in the additional text boxes provided.
  7. Click Next to continue.
  8. Click Finish.

Want to restore to factory settings. running windows 7 ultimate

Anonymous,
There are a couple of ways to Restore the system to the factory image. It depends on the system. Some older systems you would start the computer and press CNTRL+F11 and choose to restore. Other systems you would start the computer and TAP the F8 key and choose "Repair Your Computer" and follow the prompts to restore. Newer systems use a program called Dell Datasafe Local Backup accessed from the F8 advanced menu.
Thank You,

Trying to restore to factory settings. i pressed f8 but option "repair your computer isnt there"

try cntrl + F11 at start up

WHAT CAN CAUSE PC RESTORE TO FAIL?
If the hidden DSR (Dell System Restore) partition is removed

If the MBR (Master Boot Record) is modified in any way (such as if you load the Vista Upgrade over XP)

If you change the MBR but the pointers to the DSR partition are left, the DSR will boot, detect that the MBR has changes, and flash a screen that informs you that the MBR has changed and that image restore will not run

If you create additional partitions, changing the MBR, Dell PC Restore will be disabled to prevent it from overwriting these partitions that may contain critical data during a restore operation

If you add a second SATA drive and migrate to a RAID array using the Intel applications accelerator in windows, running PC Restore will put the image back on C:\, but the system will not boot since the boot sector is looking for the ATA driver (factory image) and the bios is looking for the RAID driver (migrated configuration)

If any of these occur, you cannot set the system back to Factory condition. You must manually load the operating system, drivers, and all application software.

How do I back up my files on my Dell Inspiron 530?

Dell provide something they call "Dell PC Restore" or "Dell Factory Image Restore", which lives on a partition of your hard drive, and puts the operating system and drive back to their pristine state.
On my machine, I press Ctrl-F11 while the Dell logo is visible at start-up, and it gets me into the restore menu.Oh I see. That sounds like an auto-reformat. Quite nifty.
I wonder how they protect that partition? Viruses can be sneaky.

Wont boot up.which button should i press to reset factory settings on powering up?inspiron 530

Factory settings are normally achieved by pressing the F8 on boot up, and choosing the option for "Repair My Computer". If this doesn't work, then CTRL+F11 should take you directly into the recovery option.

THIS LINK FROM DELL should walk you through the process.

I cant reboot my dell inspiron530s to the factory settings? i ve try every thing,Ctrl+F11 and it wont work

Many manufacturer's (especially Dell) have a habit of creating a hidden partition on your local drive which holds everything you need to put your computer back to day zero. Access to this is acheived either through a combination of key presses (this will show up when booting the computer as a message stating "press xx to repair your computer") or through the original cd/dvd rom that came with your new system.
You can obtain the original discs through dell from their website. You can obtain information and help through the dell forums.

When switching on my dell inspiration2200 laptop on,the dell logo comes on then screen goes blank with small white dash on top left side flashing.have tried ctrl f11 several times

By pressing ctrl f11 after when the dell logo comes on, it will do a process to return your computer to its factory settings and will delete all the data in your computer. It will be back to the state when you first bought your computer. Just wait a little longer for the process to finish. If after an hour it does not do anything then the process has a problem. You will have to do a clean install. And to do this you need your Operating System install cd.

I am trying to restore my Dell Inspiron 6400 to factory settings as I have a Trojan that I cannot get rid of. However when I press ctrl f11 nothing happens and my laptop continues to boot to the OS. I have...

If you want to reformat to factory condition, then press Ctrl + F11 at start-up when the blue bar comes up with "Dell.com" on it. If you miss it then just let it start up, then restart and try again. If it still does not work, press F12 at startup and select recovery option. Please note, if you have deleted the Dell Recovery Partition this will not work for you. You will need to reformat by inserting your Operating System CD at Startup and booting from that (F12).

Dell laptop inspiron 1000

Put recovery disk in the CD drive. On reboot, hold down F12 key. You should get a choice of drives to boot from. Make sure the first two are in the correct order:

1. CD-ROM (optical drive)
2. HDD (hard drive)

then press F10 to save and exit.

Now the laptop should boot correctly from the recovery disk.
