Have a 19502, bought it new, and seldom used, tried sewing today with it but the machine will only sew in reverse. Will not change directions even while holding down the reverse button. Is there a manual overide?

It sounds like the machine has not been used in quite a while and the reverse mechanism is sticking due to dried up oil. The oil thickens up like a varnish. The machine needs to be serviced to free up the sticking parts. This happens to machines that are not used much and therefore, not oiled regularly.

Machine will only sew in reverse

You wrote,
"Machine will only sew in reverse - Sewing Machines" A: I'm just a tinkerer, hobbyist, who did run across this same problem before. I can give a general non-model specific remedy based on my limited experience with mechanical sewing machines that get locked into sewing backwards, that is "they only want to sew in Reverse":

1. Verify what is the normal direction of the fly wheel in forward sewing for your machine. Most sewing machines, including Singers, always sew with the top of the flywheel moving toward the operator, regardless if sewing forward or backwards; but older friction-wheel White Rotary (RF) sewing machines, have the flywheel running in the opposite direction (top of Hand-Wheel turning away from the operator when sewing.

2. If it has Reverse Lever/Switch; check that it is in the correct position; if still only sews in reverse, change positions of the Direction Control lever (or Button, etc.), and see if it changes direction to correct the problem.

3. If this does not help, then jiggle the Reverse Lever and follow the linkage inside the machine and see if there is anything broken, loose or out of adjustment. Some machines have reverse control linkage elbows in the top part of machine, and by poor design are prone to accidentally pop backwards, causing sewing in the opposite direction of the position of the Reverse Lever/Button (Backwards when you want to sew Forward). On occasion, a Kenmore 158.1787180 got locked into the backwards sewing mode (the dog-gone' est thing), but by following and analyzing the linkage, I found where it was going wrong, and popped the indecisive linkage elbow back the way it was supposed to be and fixed it. [ I had more detailed notes, on this fix, but when I read them, without the machine in front of me, made no sense to me today so I can't share that till I revisit the conundrum again.]

4. If all else fails, you may be able to hold or clamp the Reverse Lever/Button in the Reverse position, so it sews Forward (I've done this before too (as a short-term fix) until I figured out how to adjust it back the way it was supposed to be.

5. If this post helped you, don't be afraid to indicate so, so Fixya will know. If it was useless, "ouch", but I'd like to know that too, so I'll be more selective on what I really know more about. I try to help, though this is probably a trade secret that anyone who knows is discrete about who they share the information with.
Sincerely
-- Amender. (2016 FEB 24)

Brand new Singer 4423 won't go in reverse ?

Your reverse lever may have become disconnected inside the machine. Return it to the dealer if you don't want to fix it yourself.

I'm having difficulty using the self threading guide. The pictures are not clear enough to follow. This is a new machine and I am just trying it out today. Is there an easier or clearer threading guide?

Try going to sewing.about.com and reading the general sewing machine threading guides and information here as all machines have common features and threading is the most important skill to be learned to become proficient as a sewer.

Then if you are still struggling, go back to the dealer you bought it from and ask to be shown again.

If you bought off the internet, then perhaps you should spend the $$$ and find a local sewing centre that runs classes in sewing machine use and maintenance as it will repay you in quality sewing time.

Started sewing backwards now not moving material at all

Sounds like the machine's age is causing the lubrication to get sticky.

Try changing the pattern by moving the pattern selector around.

Take out the bobbin and remove the thread and presser foot, raise the presser lever, set the pattern to zig zag, set the stitch length to maximum and run the machine at full speed. While it's running, repeatedly press the reverse lever all the way down. Run it for at least a few minutes.

Singer sewing machine beeps and wont repond to commands.

Sounds like you may have a blockage somewhere in the bobbin area that needs cleaning as this is normally what happens when it gets jammed. Reverse sewing can sometimes cause jams. Remove bobbin area and reassemble.

I had the same "problem" with my new machine. I called Janome's customer service and they told me the stitch length dial needs to be on S.S. I did that and it worked!
