Question about Smith Corona Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

Hey, I just pulled a Smith Corona Electra 110 out of its case, plugged it in, and started typing. Everything was going smoothly, but when I pressed the "1/4 1/2" key the letter bar started striking continuously and continued striking at the end of the page. Turning the machine off and on doesn't help. Any ideas?

Take off the bottom pan (2 screws). In the upper area, with machine on its back, you'll see levers that trip cams for each character (springs attached to all of them). Carefully spray a light lubricant over the area and work all the keys till they free up. You should be able to see the problem key if you power on while looking in that area.

Smith corona electra 110 Strike the key, won't work.

If it does nothing at all the pawls that engage the drive shaft may be gummy a little WD40 if it makes sounds like something is happening the connecting wire to the type bar is probably unhooked. You can swap it with a rarly used key and sometimes get away with it.

Just bought a Smith Corona Electra XT at the Goodwill. Works well, but it does not have a key for the number "1/!". How do I type them or why do they not have the key?

For the numeral "1", use the lower case "L". For the exclamation point, use the single quitation mark ' then backspace once and type a period under it.

Have a Smith Corona Electra 110. The ribbon doesn't turn, whether it is set to go one way, or the other. The side that's driving the ribbon makes a little **** with the keystroke, but goes back to starting...

Make sure that the ribbon has been intalled into the reverse guide forks on either side where the ribbon comes out of the spools. The ribbon should have a rivet in the fabric near the end of the ribbon so make sure you have the proper ribbon. The machine may require lubrication. You might also try taking the ribbon out and moving the R side to the Left just so you can type a little bit. Thsi may loosen the mechanism.
