I didn't drop my camera or anything and when I went to take it out of the case one day and turned it on, the lens wouldn't come out & it says Lens Error. Is it completely broken or is there a way to fix it??

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair centre for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you found this helpful.

Regards
Andrea

When the camera (Nikon Coolpix S3100) is turned on the screen soon goes black and there is an error message that reads "Lens error". This camera is almost brand new! Should I just return it?

Yes, try returning it first. If less than 30 days, AND you didn't drop this camera, your store should accept it for exchange or refund.
But in the case that your store gives you a hassle and directs you to the vendor under warranty, AND the vendor refuses to repair the camera saying it has dirt accumulation or was dropped, see the following:
Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

I was taking photos when suddenly my Canon PowerShot SD 1300 IS IXUS 105 read "Lens error. Will shut down automatically. Restart camera." Then the screen went blank. The lens will not retract....

There is something wrong with your lens barrel. It can be anything from some sand/dirt that got inside in which you try using some canned air to blow out the particles while continually turning it on and off. Usually what it is from is the camera being dropped, even if it is in a case or inside a bad. The jostle or direct impact of the fall will break some small gears or tweak the lens off of alignment. If it was from an impact then you lens barrel needs to be replaced and in that case the repair cost are usually as much as getting a new camera. You can send it into Canon and get it repair for a flat rate. Sorry about your camera.

Lens wont extend, lens error restart camera

My wife's Canon SD200 got stuck with an open lens and the E18 error. I opened the case and wiggled things and still nothing. Then, I turned the camera on and started tapping the edge of the lens casing with the magnifying glass I'd been using (need the battery and memory chip in place and make sure you've transferred pictures to your computer before trying this). Voila! The lens closed. But, of course, it wouldn't open and still gave the E18 error. Well, one good tap deserved another and Voila! again. It opened. After a few more iterations - and cleaning the lens casing each time, it was back to normal. The trick is the timing of the tapping. Just after turning on the power to the camera start tapping on the lens casing - not hard - just a light tapping. And don't tap on the glass lens itself -- you don't want to really break it.

Camera is on but lens doesnt do anything and cannot see anything

It sound like a technical problem in your camera. You may chose to fix only if it will cost you lest than $100.00 if it is more, you may be better buying a new one.

Camera doesn't turn on.

Does the camera was dropped done ? It sound like a zooming mechanism's issue (lens would not retract or extended) Try to press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
