Our atwood heater is firing up ok and running for a good while then turning itself off but we dont get any hot water out of the hot taps. Our water pump is working ok but we have this funny tap within the water system that has 2 positions and were not sure where to set it. We have just bought this and the previous owner cant remember. In one position water comes out of both cold and hot taps and the other position comes out of cold only. Can you help??? oh, its an 1994 Fleetwood avion. Thanks Rachel

Cold goes in bottom fitting of water heater, so that valve has to be open, and hot comes out the top, so that has to be open, if there is one there, but any valve in between needs to be closed. There are a few variations so if you can explain where your valves are located in the system more precisely, I can help better. Perhaps you can send a digital picture with reply?

Thanks. I dont know how to send you a picture. Do you have an e mail I can send you something to? There only seems to be one valve and in one position the cold runs and the hot doesnt. In the other position(i presume is on) the cold and hot run but it wont run. We fiddled with it once before and got hot water but since weve towed the trailer it isnt working again. Rach

this is a basic 1 valve by-pass set-up, is this like yours?

  • rachspeakeas Nov 17, 2010

Couldnt tell you. were too scared to pull the heater out of the trailer as its so old. Next to the heater is the locker with all the water bits in it, thats where this tap is ill take a photo of it but how do i get the photo to you. The annoying thing is we had it working before we moved the trailer. Weve just bought it and the guy said the hot water was fine and had been using it for 2 years. I think if you saw the pic you might have more of a clue. Its not an easy job to get to the back of the heater as its built in.

You shouldn't have to pull water heater to get access to that valve. With that said, I have worked on some Avions over the years, and they are a little more of a challenge sometimes, so I won't rule that out completely. That valve, if it's just a normal turn clockwise to close, or counterclockwise to open, and it's on the blue, or lower line going in to bottom of water heater, needs to be open. If it has a big handle, needs to be in normal operation position, or if small valve like in this picture, should be pointing in direction of line going into bottom of water heater, not up. Some of those plastic/nylon valves have been known to start opening only half way after a time, so it may just be that, or else it's check valve probably at top fitting on hot line is stuck and not allowing flow out of water heater. In meantime, there should be directions on how to send pictures on main page, but I'll double check procedure, and get back to you.

Fantastic! Ill try and work out getting a pic to you. All the pipes are the same color and you cant really see where they go to or come from. Ill get you a pic. Thanks ever so much for your time, we are living in the van full time and no hot water is a pain as you can imagine. Rach

Hot water tap creates an annoying noise in the mh. The noise is coming from the Atwood hot water heater. (2007 Coachmen Mirada).

Like a buzzing noise? Check valve where water lines connect at back will make a buzzing noise, if you only hear it when running hot water and not when running cold. Remove and replace it after shutting water off, and draining tank down. Be sure to shut off any hydro to electric element prior to draining. You can buy a replacement check valve, or just put a short 1/2" pipe nipple in there instead and reconnect your line, and refill it. noise should be gone .

Hot water noise when tap is turned on louder when full on at tap. Atwood MOdel GC104A

Noise in pipe means vibration.
Pipes vibrate when water turns corner, or if there is a clog somewhere in the line, or if there is air in the line.
Water heaters make noise when sediment builds up inside of tank.
I would probably try to track location of noise, and then put that spot on top of suspect list. For example if sink has shut-off, and noise seems loudest there.

Have a 2005 coach w/Atwood DSI-RV 6 gal water heater. Gas lights, heater fires and gets hot, but doesn't transfer the hot water through the lines to the sink faucets. [email protected]

You need to check by-pass valve(s) on back of tank for proper position. You need cold open going in to bottom tank fitting, and hot open at top. If any valves in between those 2 lines via "T"'s, turn them to off position.

I have a 1994 pop up with an Atwood water heater. I hear the water heater turn on when plugged in but no hot water.

Have you checked your by-pass at rear of water heater to make sure it's in proper position? If it's still in bypass, you will only get cold water from either tap. Cold water goes in bottom, and hot comes out top. Any valves in between those 2 lines need to be off. Let me know what you find, as they use a few different ways to do the by-pass.

RV water heater problem: my water heater ignities, when I turn on the hot water faucet there is a steady flow of water but no hot water. The bypass valve is parallel with the cold water line. I can only...

The first question is this
From the outside of your RV is the water heater square or is it longer than it is tall?

If it is square it is a Suburban
If it is longer than it is tall then it is an Atwood
Forest River mostly uses Suburban

How long do you let the unit burn/run before you try the hot water? From a cold start it will take - depending on the outdoor temp. & the gallon size of your water heater, 15 to 30 minutes for the water to get hot.

If you have waited this long then I would suspect the bypass valve is in the wrong position
